Job summary

British Columbia Conservation Foundation is seeking a Safety Coordinator and Check-ins Monitor in Surrey, BC (or Kamloops, BC) with potential for some remote work. This desk-based role focuses on safety coordination, documentation, and administrative support for conservation projects.

The position starts ASAP, offers a permanent role with a 3-month probation and a wage of $25 per hour. After-hours on-call coverage is compensated, and a hybrid remote/office work arrangement is available.

Qualifications

• Live in the Metro Vancouver or Kamloops area and are legally able to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

• Provide health and safety support to projects in collaboration with regional coordinators and accounting.
• Maintain the Occupational Health and Safety Program and lone worker check-in system.
• Monitor safety costs, orientations for temporary hires, and safety paperwork.
• Set up, test and manage inReach devices; purchase and inventory safety gear.
• Track safety gear rentals and prepare cost paperwork for approvals.
• Oversee JOHSC meetings and record meeting minutes.
• Report injuries and near misses to internal parties and WorkSafeBC as required.
• Disseminate workplace safety information via email, bulletins and meetings.
• Enhance the safety content on the foundation website.

Safety Coordinator and Check-ins Monitor

Location: Surrey, BC or Kamloops, BC
Potential for some remote work

Wage: $25/hr

Type: Permanent position with a 3-month probation period

Hours: 27.5 office hours per week, Monday to Friday, plus after-hours on-call coverage for missed check-in monitoring and compensated at a weekly flat rate equivalent to 10 additional hours including on-call coverage on weekday evenings and one weekend per month.

Job Description

BC Conservation Foundation is seeking an energetic, organized, and adaptable person for a fast-paced, primarily desk-based role focused on safety-related coordination, documentation, and administrative support for work-term centered conservation projects. This is not a typical HSE position involving regular safety inspections, field audits, or frequent site visits; the day-to-day work is largely paper-centric and involves managing monthly safety expenditures, charge-outs, safety orientations for new temporary hires, check-in monitoring, and other safety-related paperwork. The ideal candidate enjoys handling a busy and complex administrative workload, has a strong interest in workplace safety, and is comfortable working with detailed information in a remote or office-based environment. Occasional site visits may be added over time, but they are not a core focus of the position. The successful candidate will bring a positive, can-do attitude, a willingness to learn and adapt, and the ability to respond quickly while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

Working closely with the foundation’s Regional Coordinators and Accounting Department, the Safety Coordinator and Check-ins Monitor provides health and safety support to projects. The Safety Coordinator maintains the existing Occupational Health and Safety Program, monitors the lone worker check-in system, ensures safety costs are properly processed and promotes a positive safety culture in the workplace, especially for term-based employees. Tasks include:

• Conduct safety orientations for new and return hires


• Ensure Project Safety Assessments (PSAs) are completed by the employee(s), and ensure appropriate safety control measures are in place to minimize the risk of injury


• Use, monitor and organize third-party check in services (i.e., SafetyLine) to monitor fieldwork staff across the province


• Use sound judgment to calmly and effectively respond to fieldwork emergencies and missed check-ins


• Set up, test, activate, distribute and inventory inReach devices as required


• Purchase, maintain, distribute and inventory safety equipment, including first aid kits, truck kits, bear spray, satellite communication devices and project-specific gear


• Track rental safety gear and SafetyLine usage and prepare cost paperwork for approval by project managers before submitting to the accounting department for processing


• Oversee and deliver Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) meetings and take meeting minutes.


• Report workplace injuries and near misses to all applicable internal parties (e.g. project managers and payroll department) and to WorkSafeBC, and complete incident investigations where required


• Stay current on WorkSafeBC regulations and industry safety initiatives


• Provide health and safety support and guidance to Project Coordinators and employees


• Effectively disseminate workplace safety information throughout the organization using email, newsletters, safety bulletins and meetings.


• Enhance content for the safety section of the BC Conservation Foundation website


• Assist colleagues on other organizational tasks as needed.
