Job summary

Prairie Bus Lines in Red Deer and surrounding areas seeks a Safety and Training Leader to strengthen safety practices and partner with operations to drive performance. You will respond to incidents, conduct investigations and promote a culture of safety across drivers, mechanics, and staff.

Qualifications

  • Three years in health and safety or transportation safety roles.
  • Experience in school bus operations or transportation industry.
  • Hands-on experience with incident investigations, hazard assessments, workplace inspections, OH&S committee leadership, ergonomic assessments.
  • Experience with COR program and transportation/national safety code audits and compliance.
  • A class 5 driver's license with a clean abstract; upgrading to class 2QS is an asset.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to establish rapport with a diverse frontline workforce.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; aptitude to learn company systems.
  • Safety designation or certification is an asset (CRSP, CRST, CTSP, NCSO, CHSC, etc.).
  • Experience with workers' compensation claims management and return-to-work planning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement proactive local safety programs, policies, safe work procedures and initiatives to improve safety performance.
  • Lead toolbox talks, training drills, hazard identification and foster local safety culture in operations.
  • Conduct investigations of hazards, near misses and incidents.
  • Manage injury and collision files in collaboration with insurers.
  • Respond on-scene to significant safety incidents.
  • Develop and present safety materials at employee meetings.
  • Lead COR and transportation safety audit prep.
  • Support OH&S committee meetings, inspections and activities.
  • Report and manage workplace injury claims.
  • Monitor operations for compliance with requirements.
  • Maintain current and accurate safety records.

Safety and Training Leader

Seeking an opportunity to stretch your safety skills and partner with operational leaders to move the needle? Looking for a role where your day will never be dull?

Prairie Bus Lines is seeking a Safety and Training Leader to support its Red Deer and surrounding area locations. As a key partner and resource to the local operations team and leaders, you'll respond to and investigate safety hazards, near misses and incidents and, most importantly, drive the development and implementation of people and operational safety programs that push the organization toward safety culture and performance excellence.

If you take on this role, you'll need to be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment, work independently as a self-starter, effectively prioritize your work, demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and bring your safety leadership skills to work every day.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement proactive local safety programs, policies, safe work procedures and initiatives that improve local safety performance and compliance with both internal and external occupational health and safety and transportation safety requirements
  • Be present in the operation to build relationships with frontline employees, lead small group safety meetings (toolbox talks), support training drills, identify hazards and foster the local safety culture
  • Conduct investigations of reported hazards, near misses and incidents
  • Manage collision files in collaboration with the company's adjustors and insurers
  • Respond on-scene to significant collisions and other safety incidents
  • Develop and present material at employee safety meetings
  • Lead the preparation for the annual certificate of recognition (COR) and transportation safety audits
  • Support the local joint occupational health and safety committee meetings, inspections and other activities
  • Report and manage workplace injury claims and cases
  • Monitor operations to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements
  • Maintain current and accurate safety records
Knowledge And Skills Required
  • Three years in health and safety or transportation safety roles
  • Experience in school bus operations (preferred) or other experience in the transportation industry
  • Hands-on experience with tactical safety activities, such as incident investigations, hazard assessments, workplace inspections, joint occupational health and safety committee leadership, ergonomic assessments, etc.
  • Experience with the certificate of recognition (COR) program and transportation/national safety code audits and compliance
  • A class 5 driver's license with a clean abstract and a willingness to upgrade to a class 2QS (note, a class 2 license is considered an asset)
  • A proven ability to establish rapport with a diverse frontline workforce coupled with excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite office and the aptitude to quickly learn other products used by the company
  • An occupational health and safety certificate or diploma (desired); a safety designation or certification is considered an asset - e.g., CRSP, CRST, CTSP, NCSO, CHSC, etc.
  • Experience with workers' compensation claims management and return-to-work planning
Remuneration

This a full-time position with a salary of $54,000 annually, plus benefits.
