Job summary

Whitehorse Chamber is seeking a Safety and Training Officer to lead safety initiatives for the Whitehorse area, focusing on driver training and ongoing safety improvements. Qualifications

  • OHS certificate preferred.
  • Leadership or management training is an asset.
  • Knowledge of bus safety legislation is beneficial.
  • 2S trainer training/instructor license readiness required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly safety meetings and coordinate guest speakers.
  • Investigate incidents, manage files, and report findings.
  • Develop and promote safety culture and programs.
  • Foster relationships to improve safety results.
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and regulations.
  • Introduce new employees to SBC Yukon policies.
  • Coordinate Safety Review Committee activities and retraining.
  • Maintain precise paperwork and timekeeping.
  • Deliver Class 2S School Bus training to applicants.
  • Conduct daily classroom sessions and oversee road tests.

Safety and Training Officer

Standard Bus Yukon is currently seeking a Safety and Training Officer for the Whitehorse area. The successful candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and possess superior leadership skills in the training and development of our professional drivers. The ideal candidate must be able to communicate with tact and diplomacy in confidential matters. A high attention to detail, exceptional organizational and multi-tasking skills, and a focus on the continuous improvement of safe driving skills and customer service are key to success in this role.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Safety
  • Prepare and perform monthly Safety Meetings plus book guest speakers
  • Incident investigations, file management, and reporting
  • Assist with the development of the company’s safety culture and program
  • Build relationships to proactively improve safety results
  • Monitor operations to ensure staff comply with safety rules, policies, procedures, and government regulations
  • Familiarize prospective employees with SBC Yukon policies
  • CRC (Collision Review Committee) road reviews and retraining
  • Maintain precise and up-to-date paperwork and time keeping
Training
  • File and prepare information packages for new trainees
  • Provide class 2S School Bus training to applicants
  • Incident investigations, file management, and reporting
  • Perform daily classroom sessions for new trainees
  • Company road tests
  • Bi-annual road tests
  • Teach and update drivers on S-Endorsement requirements and license renewals
  • Make sure reimbursement forms are sent to the Operations Manager
  • Hours of Service
  • Manage and submit training and trainer reports
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Class 2 license with S endorsement
  • Excellent driving skills and habits; clean driver's abstract
  • Previous experience in school bus operation
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Public speaking and presentation skills
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate preferred
  • Post-secondary education and/or training in leadership or management considered an asset
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) busing-related safety legislation
  • Mandatory government 2S trainer training to obtain instructor license
