Job summary

Ontario Public Service seeks a Safety and Personnel Systems Specialist to join the AFFES program, providing expert health and safety guidance and coordinating safety initiatives across Aviation, Emergency Management and Fire Management. About the job

As Safety and Personnel Systems Specialist, you will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to provide advice, technical assistance and expertise to the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) program management and staff.

In this role, you will:

• plan, develop, coordinate and supporting health and safety programs within the branch
• identify, review and recommend opportunities for improvements to AFFES health and safety programs
• support compliance to federally and provincially legislated workplace requirements and standards
• provide advice, leadership to managers and staff on the implementation of AFFES's health and safety management system programs
• lead and coordinate efforts for the development and maintenance of occupational safety programs

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements:

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You have the ability to travel to conduct field audits, training and attend meetings.

Specialized knowledge:

• You have working knowledge of current incident prevention and risk management principles, hazard identification, as well as incident investigation and analysis to identify root causes and determine corrective actions and preventive measures.
• You have proven ability to interpret and thoroughly apply Occupational Health and Safety and applicable legislations, regulations and standards such as OH&S Act and regulations, Workplace Safety Insurance Act (WSIA) and CSA Standards to determine if AFFES programs are in compliance.
• You have demonstrated knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements and program development.
• You have knowledge of all AFFES program components (Aviation, Emergency Management, Fire Management) relating to health and safety initiatives.
• You have strong oral and written communication skills and are able to provide advice, present recommendations and prepare reports.
• You have effective interpersonal skills and are able to facilitate cooperation between clients and partners and lead program initiatives.
• You have an understanding of training methodologies and learning preferences to assist in the support and design of health and safety training programs.

Analytical and problem solving skills:

• You have proven analytical skills to assess program and situational needs.
• You have proven problem solving and resolution skills to promote corrective actions.

Organizational skills:

• You have proven organizational and project management skills to lead staff through projects and initiatives, and meet tight deadlines.
• You are proficient with common office productivity software, such as word processing, database, presentation, spreadsheet and email applications to develop program documentation, reports and evaluate techniques for program analysis.
