Job summary

School District 71 (Comox Valley) is seeking a Program Worker for Food Services to support the school food program and participate in menu planning and meal preparation. This on-call role involves coordinating with staff, parents and suppliers to ensure nutritious, safe meals for students.

The ideal candidate has Grade 12 education, Food Safe Level 2, at least one year in food services, strong communication skills, and a BC driver’s license with a vehicle for on-site tasks.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education and valid Food Safe Level 2 certification.
  • Knowledge of nutrition, health and safety standards relative to food service sanitation.
  • Minimum of one year current work experience in food services.
  • Valid Class 5 B.C. driver's license and a personal vehicle available to use on the job.
  • Meets the physical requirements of the position.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Completes program-related administrative tasks, including menu planning, documentation, and communication with parents and caregivers.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with students to inspire, educate and empower them to eat a varied diet by encouraging participation in the kitchen and garden.
  • Facilitates the School Food Program and activities according to established procedures.
  • Ensures appropriate inventory levels of food and supplies; orders and arranges delivery of necessary items from suppliers; shops in-person at local retailers.
  • Supports BC food production where possible; follows proper health and safety standards relative to food service sanitation, handling and storing of food supplies.
  • Provides leadership and orientation to ensure parent volunteers and/or student helpers abide by the same standards; maintains records and confidentiality as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor; student supervision as required.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Duties are performed under the supervision of the school Principal or Vice Principal; completes program-related administrative tasks, including menu planning, documentation, and communication with parents and caregivers, in accordance with established procedures; establishes and maintains effective relationships with students to inspire, educate and empower them to eat a varied diet by encouraging participation in the kitchen and garden; facilitates the School Food Program and activities according to established procedures; ensures appropriate inventory levels of food and supplies; orders and arranges delivery of necessary items from suppliers as required, shops in-person at local retailers, supports B.C. food production where possible; follows proper health and safety standards relative to food service sanitation, handling and storing of food supplies, and provides leadership and orientation to ensure parent volunteers and/or student helpers abide by the same standards; provides suggestions to improve the cost effectiveness of the food services program; maintains appropriate records and ensures confidentiality of student information; follows proper work procedures, observes all regulations pertinent to the work, maintains a good working relationship with other employees, and cooperates in maintaining a healthy learning and working environment; performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor; student supervision as required by the Principal or Vice Principal.
