Job summary

Toronto Danforth is seeking a part-time Robotics & Coding Instructor who will also serve as Head Coach for a high school VEX V5 team. You will mentor teens, guide hands-on engineering work, and help students develop confidence and technical skills.

You’ll teach after-school and weekend classes, support school workshops and camps, and lead the VEX team through weekly practices, testing cycles, and tournament preparation.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching or mentoring youth (teaching, tutoring, coaching, camps, clubs).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to manage diverse student personalities.
  • Comfort guiding students through mechanical design, testing, and problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with robotics platforms such as VEX V5 and LEGO Robotics.
  • Experience with VEX V5 competitions or similar robotics programs.
  • Ability to keep teens focused, productive, and aligned during hands-on work.
  • Upbeat, energetic, and able to inspire and lead others.
  • Good listener with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Organized, reliable, and able to run structured, goal-oriented practices.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Pre-employment background check required (no cost).

Responsibilities

  • Teach robotics and coding classes for students from grades 1 to 12
  • Deliver curriculum using LEGO Robotics, VEX V5, Scratch, Python, Java, C#, and other beginner-friendly languages
  • Create a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment
  • Support students with problem-solving, debugging, and hands-on building
  • Track student progress and provide feedback to students and parents
  • Lead STEM activities during PA Day, March Break, and summer camps
  • Participate in school workshops when scheduled
  • Lead weekly VEX practices and build sessions
  • Guide students through robot design, prototyping, testing, and iteration
  • Support autonomous and driver-control programming (PROS/C++ familiarity is an asset)
  • Keep practices structured and productive with clear tasks for every student
  • Help students plan tests, evaluate results, and make evidence-based decisions
  • Maintain team organization, documentation, and engineering notebook updates
  • Support competition strategy, match preparation, and tournament attendance

About the Role

We’re hiring an energetic, engaging Robotics \& Coding Instructor who will also serve as Head Coach for our high school VEX V5 robotics competition team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring teens, guiding hands‑on engineering work, and helping young builders and programmers develop confidence and technical skill.

You’ll teach after‑school and weekend classes, support school workshops and camps, and lead our competitive VEX team through weekly practices, testing cycles, and tournament preparation.

What You’ll Do

  • Experience with sensors, autonomous routines, or mechanism tuning
  • Knowledge of Scratch, Minecraft Education, Roblox Studio, HTML, JavaScript, or Unity
  • Background in STEM clubs, engineering teams, or competitive robotics
