Job summary

Summerhill Market is seeking experienced Department Managers for our Toronto and GTA locations. You will lead a department, drive exceptional customer service, maintain standards, and support store operations. This is a full-time on-site role with opportunities to grow in a dynamic grocery environment.

You will manage teams, merchandising, inventory, and promotions while focusing on food safety and profitability. Weekend availability is expected.

• Retail or grocery experience
• Supervisory or management experience
• Experience in Grocery/Produce/Front-End/retail department
• Strong leadership and people development skills
• Experience with inventory, merchandising, and operational execution

Responsibilities

• Create a positive, productive and customer-focused team environment.
• Deliver exceptional customer service and resolve customer concerns.
• Maintain strong merchandising, presentation, cleanliness and department standards.
• Manage ordering, receiving, inventory, replenishment and product rotation.
• Maintain strong in-stock positions while managing shrink, waste and markdowns.
• Review sales trends and adjust ordering and staffing accordingly.
• Monitor sales, margins, labour and department performance.
• Execute promotions, seasonal programs and merchandising initiatives.
• Manage scheduling, daily assignments, productivity and department coverage.
• Ensure pricing, signage and promotions are accurate.
• Maintain food safety, health & safety and operational standards.
• Collaborate with Store Management and other departments.
• Act as Lead on Duty (LOD) when scheduled and support broader store operations as required.
• Provide hands-on support to the team and throughout the store as needed.

About the Role

Our Department Managers take ownership of their departments — leading their teams, delivering an exceptional customer experience, and maintaining strong operational, merchandising and performance standards.

Depending on the department, responsibilities may include:

What We’re Looking For

• Previous retail, grocery or food retail experience.
• Previous supervisory or management experience.
• Experience in Grocery, Produce, Front-End/Customer Service, specialty food or another retail department.
• Strong leadership and people-development skills.
• Experience with inventory management, merchandising and operational execution.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Commercial awareness and an understanding of sales, labour, inventory, shrink and department profitability.
• Organized, proactive and comfortable managing multiple priorities.
• A hands-on approach to leadership.
• Flexible availability, including weekends, holidays and peak retail periods.
