Job summary

The Salvation Army in Winnipeg is seeking a Residential Care Worker to provide a safe, welcoming environment for residents in our ministry facility. You will monitor activities, log daily occurrences, and assist with admissions, orientation and policy enforcement to support stability and well‑being.

Requirements include high school completion and Addictions facilities training, basic computer skills, and a compassionate approach to people experiencing homelessness, addiction and trauma.

Qualifications

• High school diploma; Addictions facilities training (≤6 months) preferred.
• Experience in frontline social services and working with homeless individuals.
• Basic computer skills and willingness to learn.
• Ability to monitor environments and support residents.
• Knowledge of safety and security procedures.

Responsibilities

• Monitor residents’ activities and provide personal and morale support.
• Record daily happenings in logbooks and complete occurrence reports.
• Liaise with referral sources and external agencies as needed.
• Coordinate client care related to safety; may conduct urinalysis and breathalyzer tests.
• Conduct security checks of property and grounds.
• Handle admissions, orientation and policy enforcement.
• Manage finances related to room rentals and meal tickets.
• Serve as shelter reception and assist with meals.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

As a faith- and values-based organization, we hire and serve people of all backgrounds and walks of life - there is a place for everyone to belong here.**Mission Statement** The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.**Job Description:**POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:The Residential Care Worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitorsACCOUNTABILITIES:The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristics: • Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include safe storage and recording of prescribed medications • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (IE: Welfare, police, urgent situations) • Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved in taking random urinalysis, as well as breathalyzer tests with clients, doing bed checks, ensures adherence to check in times and curfews • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules, ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline • May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, receipting of same • May serve as reception for shelter • May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents • Performs other duties as assignedWORKING CONDITIONS: • Work is primarily performed indoors within a ministry unit or facility. • The role requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting of items up to 40 lbs. • The incumbent may interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours. • This role may require shift work, work over weekends, statutory holidays and extended hours.The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six months (Addictions facilities.) Experience and Knowledge Requirements: More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social services setting • Knowledge, experience understanding and compassion for working with people experiencing homelessness, addictions, mental health and trauma. • At least basic computer skills with willingness to learn. • An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
