Job summary

The Salvation Army in Canada seeks a Residential Care Worker to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors in a Winnipeg area facility. You will monitor activities, maintain records, liaise with external agencies, and support daily living needs including meals and reception duties.

Qualifications include a high school diploma with Addictions facilities training; experience in frontline social services and basic computer skills are expected.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma plus specialized courses of up to six months (Addictions facilities).
• Experience: More than three months but less than one year in frontline social services.
• Knowledge and compassion for working with homeless, addictions, mental health and trauma.
• Basic computer skills and willingness to learn.
• Alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Monitor clients/residents activities and provide personal, practical and morale support; may include medication handling.
• Record day-to-day happenings; maintain logs and reports.
• Liaise with referral sources and external agencies as needed (e.g., Welfare, police).
• Coordinate client care related to security; may conduct random urinalysis and breathalyzer tests, bed checks, and enforce check-in times.

Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Residential Care Worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors

Accountabilities

• Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
• Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
• Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (IE: Welfare, police, urgent situations)
• Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved in taking random urinalysis, as well as breathalyzer tests with clients, doing bed checks, ensures adherence to check in times and curfews
• May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
• Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules, ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
• May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, receipting of same
• May serve as reception for shelter
• May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
• Performs other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

• Work is primarily performed indoors within a ministry unit or facility.
• The role requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting of items up to 40 lbs.
• The incumbent may interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours.
• This role may require shift work, work over weekends, statutory holidays and extended hours.

Education And Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six months (Addictions facilities.)

Experience And Knowledge Requirements

• Knowledge, experience understanding and compassion for working with people experiencing homelessness, addictions, mental health and trauma.
• At least basic computer skills with willingness to learn.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $16.66 to $16.66 with a maximum of $16.66.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
