Job description

The Resident Care Assistant is an unregulated healthcare provider primarily responsible for closely observing patients whose behaviors pose a risk to their safety or the safety of others. Passionate about person-centered care, the observer engages in restorative care and assists with activities of daily living for the patients/residents they observe.

Working under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional, such as the Unit’s Patient Care Manager or their designate, the Resident Care Assistant supports a safe and caring environment. The patients observed may be elderly with dementia or young individuals who have experienced traumatic injuries, including those in motor vehicle collisions, victims of assault, or individuals who have attempted self-harm or experienced disfigurement.

Summary of Duties
  1. Observe assigned patients to support a safe, caring environment.
  2. Ensure safety during violent outbursts or risky behaviors.
  3. Provide 1:1 supervision for residents with conditions like Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Brain Injury, Schizophrenia, Stroke, etc.
  4. Supervise residents at risk of elopement or suicide, including those with uncontrolled behaviors.
  5. Engage residents in meaningful activities such as reading, storytelling, or looking through photo albums.
  6. Stay within close proximity during supervision, following residents to activities or programs.
  7. Complete documentation such as Dementia Observations Scale (DOS) and Behaviour Assessment Record (BAR) as required.
  8. Notify a registered health professional immediately if a patient is in danger, goes missing, or shows significant behavioral or condition changes.
  9. Interact with and comfort patients, engaging them in cognitively stimulating recreational activities.
  10. Maintain a professional appearance, including wearing a clearly legible name tag.
  11. Assist with activities of daily living under supervision of healthcare professionals.
  12. Communicate observations to the healthcare team for care planning.
  13. Complete all documentation as per institutional policies.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned, such as high-touch cleaning or filling masks.
Qualifications/Skills
  • Minimum Grade 11 or equivalent education recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
  • At least one year of recent experience in patient care or a related setting, OR a PSW certificate, OR completion of one year in an accredited nursing program.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
  • Recent accredited Personal Support Worker certificate is an asset.
  • Experience in patient-focused care and teamwork.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Proof of immunizations for MMRV, diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis B.
  • Negative TB skin test or chest x-ray within specified timeframes.
  • Willingness to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Check.
