Job description

Our Chalk River location is seeking a Research & Development (R&D) Scientist (Chemistry & Materials) to support the Reactor Chemistry & Corrosion Branch. This role involves conducting R&D in chemistry and materials, focusing on radiation chemistry in nuclear applications, radiolysis in water systems around nuclear reactor cores, and polymeric material degradation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct fundamental and applied research on power station materials integrity and systems chemistry.
  • Plan, execute, and report laboratory experiments using branch irradiation facilities.
  • Lead chemical and material analyses to understand radiation degradation mechanisms.
  • Operate and maintain irradiation facilities, including a Van de Graaff electron accelerator and gamma cells.
  • Develop and apply computer models for radiation chemistry.
  • Supervise technical staff.
  • Represent CNL at technical and industry meetings.
  • Provide troubleshooting and chemistry consulting for nuclear power plant systems.
  • Collaborate with experts across disciplines to offer comprehensive chemistry, materials, and operational services.
  • Communicate technical value to management and develop industry networks to enhance CNL’s revenue.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master's in Engineering or Science with 3+ years relevant experience or Ph.D. in Engineering or Science.
  • Experience with numerical analysis, scientific instrumentation, computer modeling, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong publication record and experience in nuclear chemistry/materials behavior.
  • Knowledge of high-temperature/high-pressure systems, process chemistry, corrosion, and polymer degradation.
  • Commitment to safety and knowledge of radiation chemistry and kinetics.
  • Security clearance eligibility, including a minimum of 3-5 years verifiable history in specified countries.
