Job description

If so, our Chalk River location is seeking Research and Development (R&D) Material Scientists to support our Materials & Fuels Performance Testing Branch. Apply today!

What will you be doing!

  1. Conducting key tasks associated with mechanical testing of irradiated and unirradiated nuclear reactor material and fuel post-irradiation examination.
  2. Executing laboratory experiments, which includes: (i) planning, designing, and setting up experimental systems; (ii) conducting experiments and generating data; (iii) interpreting, storing, and reporting results; (iv) programming data acquisition systems; (v) interfacing with technical staff and collaborators.
  3. Designing, procuring, and commissioning complex experimental apparatus to support R&D material testing projects.
  4. Coordinating the preparation of precision specimens from irradiated and unirradiated material in laboratories and hot cells.
  5. Developing and maintaining experimental facilities for mechanical testing in controlled environments.
  6. Participating in R&D programs and site support activities, including failure analyses.
  7. Mentoring junior scientific and technical staff.
  8. Performing other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor of Engineering, Material Science, or related discipline; or membership in a recognized professional organization.
  • Experience: Less than 2 years, with research experience in reactor materials, material testing, characterization techniques (SEM, FIB, EBSD, XRD), or material modeling considered assets. Experience with Zr alloys and a solid understanding of mechanics is desirable.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong communication skills, ability to work in a team, knowledge of reactor core materials, mechanical testing, failure analysis, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a structured manner and establish good rapport with diverse teams.
  • Security Clearance: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (minimum 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the US, or the UK).
