Job description

Research Associate, Research Assistant, or Associate in Respiratory Medicine

This post offers an excellent opportunity for a post-doctoral scientist interested in respiratory disease to join the Margaret Turner Warwick Centre for Fibrosing Lung Disease at the National Heart and Lung Institute.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and focused on investigating molecular pathways involved in the development of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The centre's research aims to develop more effective anti-fibrotic drugs and personalized treatment approaches for this fatal, progressive lung disease.

Responsibilities

The role involves utilizing various in vitro and ex vivo models, including 2D and 3D cultures of patient-derived lung epithelial cells and fibroblasts, as well as precision-cut lung slices. Additional studies may include scRNAseq and spatial transcriptomics on non-IPF and IPF tissue samples to better understand disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets.

Candidate Profile

  • A PhD in Biological Sciences or a related discipline, or awaiting viva voce examination.
  • Note : Candidates not yet awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistants with a salary range of £43,003 - £46,297 per annum.
  • Practical experience in human primary 2D / 3D cell culture and tissue slicing techniques.
  • Experience with functional cell biology assays (e.g., migration, proliferation) and molecular biology techniques (e.g., RT-PCR, cloning, siRNA, CRISPR).
  • Skills in protein analysis methods (e.g., ELISA, Western blot, IF staining).
  • Experience in scRNAseq / spatial transcriptomics and bioinformatics is advantageous.

What We Offer

  • The chance to develop your career at a world-leading institution committed to using science for societal benefit.
  • Competitive salary and benefits, including 39 days' annual leave, pension schemes, flexible working, family leave, on-site facilities, and cycle-to-work schemes.
  • A diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment supported by staff networks and wellbeing resources.
