Major Responsibilities:
- Reporting to the Manager, Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Compliance, the primary functions associated with this position include, but are not limited to:
- Assists the Manager and other staff within EH&S Compliance Unit on various projects related to environmental, health and safety compliance management and related systems
- Conducts thorough research and analysis on various environmental, health and safety compliance topics related to the projects and work demands of the Unit
- Researches and consults regarding environmental, health and safety compliance topics and writes briefing materials, discussion papers , technical synthesis and correspondence
- Reviews research and policy-related literature and reports produced by other levels of governments, academics, research organizations, and non-governmental organizations to determine potential impacts on Toronto Water operations
- Compiles, analyzes and correlates statistical data and reports on findings Conducts surveys as appropriate
- Prepares reports and studies for submission to management and/or Council
- Prepares abstracts and summaries of studies using a range of analytical techniques including statistical, economical, and scientific analysis
- Assists in the preparation of the capital and operating budgets and tracks Unit expenditures, and maintains records of invoicing, billing, etc.
- Tracks and communicates relevant environmental, health and safety regulatory changes as per Unit procedures
- Tracks timing, scope and status of capital projects in support of the construction EH&S compliance function in the Unit.
- Develops, implements and maintains a document and records management system that supports regulatory requirements and ISO best practices for the Unit’s projects, reports, documents, auditing and monitoring data
- Develops and maintains spreadsheets and databases and conducts detailed data manipulation of financial and/or environmental, health and safety related performance
- Prepares Requests for Proposals (RFP), Requests for Expressions of Interest, tenders and quotation requests for new projects, new equipment, and service contracts
- Monitors and administers contracts
- Supports and assists Unit staff with project activities, including meeting logistics and bookings, minute taking, attending functions as required to provide on-site assistance including liaison with senior staff
- Assists with administrative and operational duties of the unit
- Provides information and liaises with other organizations, e.g. through attendance at meetings with staff, other Divisions and sections, different levels of government, committees and community agencies
- Answers inquiries and prepares background material for responses to Councillors, the public, the media, and other agencies and organizations
- Develops, designs and delivers presentations
Key Qualifications:
- Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- University or college graduate in environmental studies/science/engineering, health and safety, or other discipline pertinent to the job function or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with environmental and health and safety legislation and/or management systems (i.e. ISO 9000, ISO 14001 or OHSAS 18001).
- Considerable experience in reviewing, understanding, and summarizing legislative and policy- related documents.
- Experience in establishing and maintaining filing and records management systems.
- Experience with conducting statistical analysis and manipulation of data.
- Experience using various software tools and applications (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, MS Project or equivalent) to conduct statistical analysis, produce reports, communicate findings and track status of completion; including developing and maintaining both spreadsheets and databases; creating presentations and graphics, developing web page content and utilizing project management software packages.
You must also have:
- Ability to research, analyze, interpret and present quantitative and qualitative information on environmental, health and safety performance and related topics from a variety of sources.
- Ability to conduct statistical analysis and manipulation of data.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, preparing clear and succinct reports and correspondence for senior management and other stakeholders.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills in combination with the ability to take initiative and perform duties under minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational skills in organizing workshops, activities and meetings.
- Knowledge of the City’s financial policies and procedures, and ability to learn and utilize SAP. Knowledge of Council, Committees and their policies and procedures.
- Sound judgment and ability to handle matters of a confidential/sensitive nature as it relates to Council and other staff.
