Job summary

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for our Databases (Relational and KeyValue) and to build scalable, multi-region datastore platforms powering critical financial services. You will collaborate across product, infrastructure and SRE to deliver high-performance storage solutions and reliable operations.

You will leverage 8+ years in backend systems, 5+ years in database expertise, and deep knowledge of MySQL, PostgreSQL, TiDB/Vitess, AWS, and Kubernetes to

Qualifications

• 8+ years designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• Extensive experience with highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes.
• 5+ years of hands-on database expertise with Relational or Distributed SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, TiDB/Vitess).
• Strong knowledge of schema design, query optimization, scaling, partitioning and performance tuning.
• Experience building and operating databases in cloud environments; knowledge of benchmarking and capacity planning.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long horizon and align it with business goals.
• Collaborate with product, infrastructure and SRE to deliver scalable datastore components.
• Design and build multi-region, horizontally scalable datastore platforms for high availability.
• Develop control planes for automated migrations, DR, sharding and performance tuning.
• Drive operational excellence with monitoring, runbooks, playbooks and on-call readiness.
• Mentor teammates and advocate for quality and robust design across teams.
