Job summary

Government of the Northwest Territories is seeking a Relief Corrections Officer to join the department’s justice team in Yellowknife. The role reports to the Shift Supervisor and Deputy Warden and focuses on safety, custody, and rehabilitation of inmates.

You will rotate posts, mentor new staff, and uphold federal and territorial laws and department directives while maintaining professionalism and respect for rights.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of corrections theories and techniques, including crisis intervention.
• Ability to interpret court documents (warrants, fines, remand, etc.).
• Knowledge of corrections policies and procedures.
• Ability to act calmly during crisis or stressful situations.
• Understanding of human behavior in custody contexts.

Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

As a Relief Corrections Officer, you will report to the Shift Supervisor and Deputy Warden and play an important role in maintaining a safe, secure, and professional correctional environment. You will supervise up to 48 incarcerated persons in custody, ensuring their care, custody, and rehabilitation while supporting their successful reintegration into the community. Working as part of the facility operations team, you will help ensure the consistent delivery and enforcement of policies, procedures, and services aligned with the Corrections Mission, Vision, and Values.

You will work in a variety of posts throughout the facility, with assignments rotating according to operational requirements. In addition to maintaining safety and security, you will support the orientation, training, and mentoring of new employees. While on duty, you will exercise the authorities and responsibilities of a Peace Officer and are expected to carry out your duties with professionalism, integrity, and respect for the rights of others.

Your work will be performed in accordance with applicable federal and territorial legislation, including the Criminal Code (Canada), the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms , the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Canada), the Youth Criminal Justice Act (NWT), the Prisons and Reformatories Act (Canada), the Corrections Act (NWT), and the Public Service Act (NWT), as well as policies such as the Corrections Service Directives, Facility Standing Orders, and Human Resource Manual.

Key Responsibilities

• To ensure a safe and secure setting that contributes to a safe and healthy living environment for persons in custody while ensuring the safety of public and staff.
• To support case management and programs, within established guidelines, in order to prepare persons in custody for reintegration into society by.
• To manage persons in custody to assist in motivating persons in custody to contribute to a safe and secure working environment by.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of practical corrections techniques and theories (i.e. social deviance, mental health, etc.) with the ability to exercise sound judgment in application (use of restraints, non-violent crisis intervention, suicide and self-harm intervention).
• Ability to interpret court documents (i.e. warrant of committals, fine defaults, remand warrants etc.).
• Knowledge of corrections policies and procedures.
• Ability to act appropriately during crisis/stressful situations.
• Knowledge of and ability to assess human behavior and persons in custody issues.

Key Qualifications

Grade 12 Diploma or Equivalency (i.e. GED) combined with successful completion of the NWT Corrections Northern Recruitment Training Program or equivalent training program from another jurisdiction.
