Job summary

Providence Living, a non-profit Catholic-sponsored health care organization, seeks a Rehabilitation Aide to assist residents in long-term care and assisted living settings. You will support therapists, supervise residents, and help implement individualized programs while operating within your scope of practice.

Reporting to the Director of Care, you will perform delegated tasks, monitor responses, and contribute to a safe clinical environment in a central city facility.

Qualifications

• Completion of Rehabilitation Assistant Program, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
• Ability to organize work.
• Ability to operate related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Performs delegated tasks as directed by supervising therapists, such as activities of daily living, applying modalities, and mobility/exercise routines.
• Observes and reports cognitive or functional changes to the supervising therapist and documents progress.
• Contributes to planning, implementation, modification, and evaluation of rehab plans with the therapist.
• Provides functional training to residents and families in activities of daily living and mobility; assists with wheelchair training.
• Assists therapists with adjustments or fabrication of supportive devices and adapts equipment; runs group exercise classes established by therapists.
• Carries out delegated feeding and swallowing programs and reports signs of aspiration.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Reporting to the Director of Care, and responsible to the clinical therapists who have assigned the functional tasks to be carried out with patients, the Rehabilitation Aide is part of a team and will assist and supervise residents as well as perform delegated and routine tasks to implement programs and monitor resident responses. The Rehabilitation Aide is expected to have a good understanding of their scope of practice and to operate within their scope of practice.

DUTIES

• Performs delegated tasks as directed by supervising therapists, such as activities of daily living, applying modalities, like hot and cold packs, ambulation programs, and individual and/or group exercises.
• Observes and reports to the supervising therapist cognitive and functional changes in resident's ability or behaviour that may warrant a progression or regression of the treatment; progresses treatment plan within the parameters established by the therapist; documents treatment provided in resident chart.
• As part of a multidisciplinary team and in consultation with the therapist, provides input into the planning, implementation, modification and evaluation of the rehabilitative treatment plan/program.
• When delegated, provides functional training to residents and families in activities of daily living, mobility, and communications; demonstrates the use of assistive devices. Assists with power and manual wheelchair mobility training.
• Assists therapists with minor alterations or fabrication of supportive devices; i.e. slings, straps, as required. Sets up and adapts equipment such as changing wheelchair backs and adjusting wheelchair height.
• Runs group exercise classes established by the therapist.
• Carries out delegated feeding and swallowing program, reporting any signs or symptoms of aspiration.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
