Job summary

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is seeking a Legal Counsel to provide timely regulatory advice, support stakeholder engagement and participate in regulatory proceedings within Alberta’s electricity regime. The role offers a hybrid work arrangement with in-office days on Tue–Thu and flexible Mon/Fri to support work-life balance. Requirements include LL.B.

Qualifications

• LL.B. or J.D. and membership in, or eligibility to become a member of, the Law Society of Alberta.
• 1–3 years of legal experience.
• Experience with regulatory proceedings, regulatory or administrative law, tariffs and ratemaking; Alberta electricity industry is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal services to AESO business departments with a focus on regulatory matters.
• Develop understanding of AESO mandate, values and goals.
• Draft and advise on AESO authoritative documents (ISO rules, Alberta Reliability Standards).
• Review NERC standards and prepare stakeholder consultation materials.
• Assist with AUC proceedings and internal regulatory processes.
• Work with external counsel and participate in stakeholder engagement.
