Job description

The position of Registered Nurse in the Obstetrics, Gynecology/Urogynecology/Colposcopy Clinic of the Women's Health Care Centre will be of interest to a nurse with a strong commitment to women's health and interest in obstetrical and gynecologic nursing. In this role, you will contribute to excellence in clinical care, patient education and unit initiatives related to teaching and research, for women with obstetrical and/or gynecological problems.

The RN works within a changing environment and in inter-professional teams to advocate for and promote wellness while ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and ethical nursing care. The RN shares their knowledge and expertise with others and contributes to the advancement of nursing practice excellence. The RN continually enhances their practice and competencies through ongoing learning, education, experience and reflective practice.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary role of the RN is to provide holistic, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, patient-centred quality care in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario standards and SMH's mission, vision, values and policies. The RN optimizes the patient's experience and care outcomes by:

    Being accountable for one's decisions and professional practice;
    Establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient;
    Collaborating with other members of the patient's care team; and,
    Coordinating and communicating patient care activities.

The RN has 4 key areas of responsibility:

Patient Care

    Acquires information to assess patient care and learning needs
    Develops a plan of care and integrates nursing activities with other inter-professional activities
    Engages in critical inquiry and reflection to select evidence-based interventions
    Organizes nursing care and assigns or changes nursing care activities where appropriate
    Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and adjusts the plan as needed
    Anticipates, recognizes and addresses rapidly changing situations
    Provides health education to patients and their families using effective teaching strategies
    Documents observations, assessments and care provision
    Contributes to discharge and transition planning
    Refers patient to other agencies or services as needed

Collaboration & Coordination

    Serves as the primary resource for organizing and coordinating patient care activities
    Establishes and maintains respectful, collaborative, therapeutic and inter-professional relationships
    Coordinates and communicates patient care activities for a safe and seamless transition and appropriate transfer of accountability
    Participates in hospital committees and other groups

Leadership

    Aligns behavior with SMH's vision, mission and values and Code of Conduct
    Supports the advancement of professional practice
    Utilizes effective judgment in assigning patient care activities
    Practices in a self-directed way, taking professional accountability for leading, organizing and providing care activities
    Engages in self-reflection, performance review and ongoing learning
    Participates in mentoring, teaching and /or coaching students, co-workers and other regulated and unregulated health professionals
    Embraces change that leads to improved nursing practice and better patient outcomes

    Supports and participates in evidence based practice implementation and quality improvement initiatives

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Provide effective, evidence based Obstetrical/gynecological health teaching for women before and after appointments with their Obstetrician-Gynecologist.
    Provide information, anxiety-reduction and support for women undergoing or scheduled for tests ie obstetrical assessments and gynecological appointments. Identify special needs for these women and ensure an appropriate care plan is developed, for example, counselling for cervical dysplasia treatment.
    Assist with the specimen collection process as needed during obstetrical and gynecologic examinations.
    Provide telephone triage for clinic patients experiencing obstetrical or gynecological problems between visits.
    Provide telephone follow-up education for disclosed test results and recommended further care as directed by the Obstetrician Gynecologist.
    Function collaboratively as a member of the multidisciplinary Obstetrical/Gynecology Clinic Team, and coordinate day-to-day needs of the Clinic.
    Facilitate the education of nursing and medical students and students of other health disciplines within the Obstetrical/ Gynecology Clinics.
    Contribute to the research mission of the department by facilitating implementation of research studies within the Gynecology Clinic in collaboration with physicians/principal investigators.
    Contribute to development and evaluation of services within the Clinic in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
    Participate in and contribute to continuous quality improvement activities within the Woman's Health Clinic.
    Participate in other clinical duties as required and demonstrate flexibility with re-assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

    Current General Class (Practicing) Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
    Current BLS certification.
    Minimum of two years recent experience in gynecologic, obstetrical and/or ambulatory nursing relevant to this role.
    Fetal Health Surveillance Certificate preferred, or willing to complete within 3 months of hire
    Health assessment course essential
    Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze, summarize and document assessment data in an accurate, concise and efficient manner.
    Demonstrated excellence in patient-centered care and patient/family education.
    Superior listening and communication skills, and strong collaboration skills.
    Ability to function in a fast paced environment.
    Must have an excellent attendance record.
