Job description

The Rapid Access Addiction Medicine Clinic offers support to individuals requiring help with substance use disorders. The clinic provides care for addiction issues, including assessments, counselling, and prescription for medications that may help with lessening cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Many hospital inpatients also experience substance use disorders, and the inpatient addiction medicine consult team provides addiction-specific assessments and treatments for this patient population. The Registered Nurse will work collaboratively within a team that includes an addiction medicine physician and other allied health professionals. The Registered Nurse will conduct medical assessments, mental health, addictions, and risk assessments and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions both for RAAM clinic outpatients as well as inpatients being assessed by the inpatient addiction consult team. The RN will work closely with the clinic social worker to support individual and group psychotherapeutic interventions, including but not limited to system navigation and psychotherapy in individual and group settings.

The Registered Nurse will also support the outpatient mental health department as an integral member of the interprofessional team comprised of physicians, social workers, occupational therapists, and other health professionals. Working closely with other members of the team, the RN is responsible for the provision of comprehensive mental healthcare including, but not limited to clinical coordination and triage for multiple outpatient clinics, assessments of patients and families, individual counselling, group therapies, administration of injectable psychiatric medications, POC tests, and facilitation and active participation in various clinical procedures including ECT. The RN in this role will also work collaboratively with other team members in the development and implementation of additional clinics and services as new treatment options become available.

The RN’s assignment will be based on operational and clinical needs of the Mental Health and Substance Use Program.

EDUCATION

  • Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Completion of, or working towards the CNA Psychiatric / Mental Health Nursing Certificate is strongly preferred.
  • Evidence of completion of mental health continuing education certification in two of the following modalities : Motivational Interviewing, CBT, DBT or similar modalities / approaches required, or a commitment to complete certifications within 8 months of hire.
  • Completion of a mental health and / or addiction nursing course from an accredited college, or a commitment to attend and complete the education within one year of hire.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess a BScN or are working towards this degree.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 years of recent relevant clinical experience in a mental health or addiction medicine setting required, preferably with experience in addiction nursing. Preference will be given to candidates with 5 years of recent experience in a mental health and substance use setting.
  • Experience and competence with medical nursing, physical health assessment, and management of acute intoxication and withdrawal.
  • Demonstrated excellence in nursing diagnosis, assessment, intervention, and evaluation processes.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with an interprofessional team.
  • Sound knowledge of Mental Health Act / Mental Health Reform.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of counseling and therapeutic techniques; experience with at least two modalities : motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioural therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy required.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and / or education.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of community resources.
  • Demonstrated skills in the administration of neuroleptic depot medications is considered an asset.
  • Proven experience working with psychogeriatric patients’ population is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in group settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and co-facilitate therapeutic groups.
  • Satisfactory work and attendance record required.
