Overview

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive psychiatric nursing care, including patient and family assessments, group therapies, discharge planning, and coordination on an acute Inpatient Mental Health Unit and in the MHEAZ (Mental Health Emergency Assessment Zone) of the Emergency Department. The RN may also work in other mental health services and programs based on operational needs.

Education

• Registered Nurse with current certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• BScN preferred.
• CPMHN(C) certification is an asset.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year Mental Health Nursing experience (Inpatient, Outpatient, Community-Based, or a combination).
• Proven excellence in psychiatric and medical nursing diagnosis, assessment, intervention, and evaluation.
• Knowledge of the Mental Health Act/Mental Health Reform.
• Ability to articulate client-centered, recovery, trauma-informed, strength-based, and harm reduction philosophies.
• Knowledge of counselling and therapeutic techniques.
• Understanding of psychotropic medications.
• Experience in Mental Status assessment, including Suicide Risk Assessments.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, critical thinking, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
• Willingness to work in all areas of the health service as needed.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development.
• Flexibility to work all shifts.
• Computer proficiency.
• Maintain competence with current practices.
• Good work and attendance record.
