Job summary

New Gold Inc. is hiring a Red Seal Electrician for the New Afton mine near Kamloops, BC. The role focuses on electrical/mechanical support for surface and underground operations, maintenance, and installing or modifying equipment.

7 on/7 off, 11‑hour shifts, with a strong emphasis on safety and documentation. Qualified candidates bring PLC/DCS automation experience, MV/HV electrical knowledge, and leadership in daily activity planning.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years in an industrial setting.
• Advanced understanding of process system automation, PLC controls, fixed plant, mobile equipment and motor control systems.
• Strong knowledge in industrial automation including PLC programming and troubleshooting.
• Experience with DCS systems and troubleshooting process instrumentation.
• Excellent knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code and Mines Act; demonstrated leadership and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Install, troubleshoot, design, commission, and maintain control systems, electrical, hydraulic, motor control, VFDs, radios, and controllers for surface and underground areas.
• Coordinate with operations for daily needs of the field.
• Maintain inventory and parts, order supplies, and follow up on deliveries.
• Ensure equipment is in safe, proper working condition and meets safety/production goals.
• Document work orders, commissioning docs, daily reports, SOPs, PMs and JHA.

New Afton

Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Kamloops is a city of 105,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. About the Role

Schedule: 7 on, 7 off, Wednesday to Tuesday, 11-hour shifts

Position Reports To: Electrical & Instrumentation Supervisor

Position Overview

Red Seal Electriciansprovide electrical/mechanical support in response to operational changes resulting from the malfunction, breakdown, relocation, replacement or installation of new equipment associated with all aspects of the mine site including surface and underground operations. The Technician conducts preventative/corrective maintenance on all electrical systems. Red Seal Electriciansare an instrumental part of the planning team during the installation or modification of new or existing equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, troubleshoot, design, commission, and maintain all control systems, electrical, hydraulic, motor control, VFDs, radios, and solid-state controllers associated with the surface and underground mining areas;
• Work with operations assisting in the daily operating needs of the field;
• Maintain equipment, parts, and supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed equipment parts, and supplies, placing requests with the planners and follow up on deliveries when required;
• Perform machine ownership responsibilities on assigned equipment to exceed expectation of ensuring equipment is in proper working condition to meet safety, quality and productivity expectation;
• Communicate with your immediate lead hand on daily activity and any issues whether positive or negative to ensure a healthy work environment and continuity between technicians and crews;
• Demonstrate leadership through direction and guidance of daily activities;
• Address and mitigate safety/environmental risks to ensure all daily safety protocols are being met;
• Deliver and support operational technology in support of business objectives at New Afton;
• Maintain excellent documentation including but not limited to work orders, commissioning documentation, daily reports, as-builts, status reports, safety and maintenance programs, job hazard analysis (JHA), standard operating procedures (SOP) and preventative maintenance (PM) documentation;
• Demonstrate clear and effective communication with onsite departments, in house expertise as well as equipment suppliers/field service technicians.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years in an industrial setting;
• Advanced understanding of process system automation, PLC Controls, fixed plant, mobile equipment and motor control systems;
• Strong knowledge in industrial automation including PLC programming and troubleshooting;
• Experience working with DCS systems and troubleshooting of process plant instrumentation;
• Excellent knowledge and troubleshooting skills in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code and Mines Act;
• Demonstrated leadership through daily activities and ability to prioritize and execute a dynamic schedule;
• Demonstrated experience with documentation as outlined in responsibilities above;
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate;
• Proven safety record.

Preference will be given to those candidates with any of the following:

• Experience working in an underground industrial mine setting;
• Experience operating and maintaining High Voltage switchgear and mobile equipment;
• Experience with VFD and soft start operations;
• Experience/dual ticket with instrumentation.

Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

• Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
• Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver's license
• Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
• Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements

Compensation

The anticipated salary for this position will be between $118,000 to $124,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
