Job summary

Baycrest is seeking a Recreationist to join the Therapeutic Recreation team at the Apotex Centre for the Aged. The role focuses on designing and delivering meaningful activities that support residents' independence and well-being.

You will work with interprofessional teams, supervise volunteers, document programs, and help maintain supplies, ensuring safe, compassionate and engaging experiences for residents.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a two (2) year College Diploma in Recreation or Activation or equivalent required
  • At least 1 year experience in a Recreationist role or equivalent required
  • Knowledge of community resources an asset
  • Second language an asset, i.e. Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian or Hungarian
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes therapeutic programs with the Apotex Therapeutic Recreation and Culture & Arts teams
  • Completes documentation as required
  • Attends interprofessional team meetings
  • Interviews, orients, supervises and sets expectations with volunteers
  • Contributes to interprofessional team and therapeutic recreation professional development
  • Coordinates services with other staff/departments
  • Develops and maintains inventory of program supplies

The Apotex Therapeutic Recreation team helps long-term care residents enjoy meaningful and satisfying recreational experiences. Recreationists assess each resident’s strengths, interests and goals to design activities that support independence and well-being. We also adapt activities to meet individual needs so everyone can participate. We work closely with other departments to create a holistic and engaging recreational experience.

Leisure is an important component of both quality of life and well-being.It allows individuals opportunities for self-determination and utilization of strengths while engaging in meaningful leisure, which is the foundation of Therapeutic Recreation services. Therapeutic Recreation services are offered across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Works with the Apotex Therapeutic Recreation and Culture & Arts teams to develop and execute therapeutic programs

Qualifications

  • Member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (‘TRO’) or Activity Professionals of Ontario (‘APO’) preferred
  • Experience in planning, implementing and evaluating creative recreation preferred
  • Experience in supervision of volunteers preferred
  • Experience with a geriatric population with multiple medical conditions and/or cognitive impairment preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources an asset
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture, Holy Days and festivals are an asset
  • Second language an asset, i.e. Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian or Hungarian
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel
