Job summary

Homewood Health Centre is seeking a Recreation Therapist to join a collaborative inter-disciplinary team delivering recreation-based interventions for patients. You will assess, plan, implement and document therapy, while mentoring students and promoting recovery-oriented care.

The role emphasizes group facilitation, individualized counselling, and partnerships with the care team to optimize patient outcomes in a supportive environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy required.
  • CPR Certification required.
  • Registration (R/TRO) or CTRS within 1 year of hire.
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills.
  • Team oriented with ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Assume a therapeutic role in the motivation, counselling, supervision, and instruction of patients in treatment interventions
  • Facilitate psychoeducational and experiential groups
  • Administer and interpret Recreation Therapy assessments to determine leisure functioning, and needs/problems using standardized assessment tools and group process, 1:1 interviews, and observation skills
  • Communicate and document results of the assessment to the patient, family, and team
  • Provide individual counselling following Recreation Therapy assessment
  • Document treatment and ongoing progress of patient
  • Support individual skill development relating to community leisure resources
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate programs based on patient needs
  • Consult, liaise, and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members involved in patient care during meetings regarding patient progress, recommendations, and program issues
  • Provide group and 1:1 coverage for other interdisciplinary team members during vacation, sick time and leaves
  • Act as a consultant, and work collaboratively with Recreation Therapists in other programs regarding specialized patient needs
  • Mentor/supervise University Recreational Therapy students completing placements
  • Advocate the Recreation Therapy Service Delivery Model perspective, and promote the value of Recreation Therapy as an essential service
  • Participate in relevant committee work, program development, research projects, and continuous quality improvement activities
  • Attend relevant discipline and service area meetings
  • Act as a resource to hospital and community regarding clinical expertise
  • Remain accountable for budget supplies
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy
  • CPR Certification is required
  • Registration (R/TRO) OR Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) required within 1 year of hire
  • Comfortable with public speaking and large group facilitation
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Awareness and acknowledgement of the value of using measurement-based care when supporting patients/clients to help guide clinical decision making; experience an asset
  • Ability to use a continuum of Recreation Therapy Interventions for group facilitation
  • Gentle Persuasion Approach training an asset
  • Montessori based programming for dementia care an asset
  • Seniors Fitness Instructor training an asset
  • Excellent assessment and communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Commitment to working within Homewood’s Health and Safety Standards
