Job Summary

Reporting to the Recreation Manager, the Activity Worker II carries out established resident activity programs designed to promote social engagement, physical well-being, cognitive stimulation, and quality of life for residents. Working within the mission, vision, and values of George Derby Centre, the Activity Worker II supports a resident-centered approach to recreation and leisure programming.

Key Responsibilities
Recreation Programming
  • Implements established activity programs for residents, including arts and crafts, sports, woodworking, cooking, gardening, exercise, music, games, and special events.
  • Sets up and organizes furnishings, equipment, and supplies required for activity programs.
  • Instructs residents in the techniques and safe use of materials and equipment associated with various activities.
  • Encourages resident participation and provides support during individual and group activities.
  • Observes resident participation and reports concerns, changes, or unusual occurrences to the Recreation Therapist or Recreation Manager.
Community and Outing Activities
  • Assists with resident outings and activities outside the facility.
  • Ensures residents have appropriate clothing, mobility aids, and necessary equipment for participation.
  • Coordinates resident movement and safety during community-based activities.
  • Provides instruction and support related to activity participation.
  • Provides direction and guidance to volunteers participating in recreation programs.
  • Demonstrates activity techniques and ensures volunteers understand program objectives and resident needs.
Equipment and Safety
  • Maintains recreation areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are properly cleaned, stored, and maintained.
  • Adheres to infection prevention and control practices, safety procedures, and organizational policies.
Other Duties
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Grade 12 graduation.
  • Completion of recognized recreation, activity worker, or related recreational courses.
  • Two (2) years of recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Successful completion of Food Safe Level 1.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents, families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to teach and demonstrate recreational activities.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and activity supplies.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a long-term care environment supporting residents with diverse physical, cognitive, and emotional needs.
  • Rotating schedule to ensure recreation services are available seven days per week, including weekends and occasional statutory holidays as required.
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing wheelchairs, and assisting residents during activities and outings.
