Job summary

West Coast Seniors Housing Management is seeking a Recreation Aide to assist in planning, implementing and evaluating activity programs for residents in our Vancouver area communities.

You will work under the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/Recreation Manager to promote engaging programs, coordinate calendars and support volunteers while ensuring a safe, dignified environment for residents.

Qualifications

  • Must have Grade 12 education.
  • Two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or Health Care Aide with Recreation/Activity Certificate.
  • Experience in a senior care environment is an asset.
  • Dementia course is an asset.
  • Serving It Right Certificate.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate is an asset.
  • Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver’s License.
  • All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
  • Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
  • Assists in the development of recreation and leisure services including program research development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Promotes, publicizes and carries out established recreation programs such as outings, exercises, crafts, social events, entertainment, games.
  • Assists in the completion and posting of monthly calendars and newsletters outlining programs and services available to residents/tenants and families.
  • Coordinates external groups to provide in-house programs.
  • Assists residents and provide portering to and from programs as required.
  • Observes, documents and reports any changes in residents to the supervisor and/or nurse.
  • Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through: knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation as per policy and procedures, confidentiality and security.
  • Actively participates in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees and educational in-services.
  • Assists in the maintenance of statistical records using programs such as Activity Pro, Point Click Care, etc.
  • Assists with orientation of new residents and encourages residents to participate or volunteer in their own community.
  • Provides guidance, assistance and support to volunteers, while assists in the evaluation of volunteers.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

About the Role

The Recreation Aide reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/ Recreation Manager or designate. This role assists in planning, implementing and evaluating activity programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of persons served, while maintaining the rights of residents and ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.

Responsibilities

Include but not limited to;

Qualifications & Skills:

Grade 12 Education

A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or at a minimum a Health Care Aide with a Recreation/Activity Certificate.

Previous experience in a senior’s focused environment an asset.

Dementia course an asset.

Serving It Right Certificate.

Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset

Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver’s License.
