Job summary

Prairie Mountain Health is seeking an activity/recreation worker to develop and provide recreation programs aimed at promoting health, wellness and recovery for clients. The role works collaboratively with clients, families and the interdisciplinary team to align services with PMH vision and values.

You will plan group and individual activities, monitor progress, and ensure programs meet safety and confidentiality standards while adapting to client needs within a healthcare setting.

Qualifications

  • Current Food Handler Training Certificate Level 1 or willing to obtain within 6 months
  • Experience working with the elderly, physically and/or cognitively disabled
  • Two years recent relevant experience with clients in health care or recovery
  • Proficiency with Microsoft programs and internet applications
  • Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team
  • Commitment to confidentiality and cultural diversity

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and implements activity and recreation programs for clients
  • Organizes group activities and provides instruction to develop skills
  • Communicates client progress to the interdisciplinary team and updates plans
  • Develops creative activities based on client interests and needs
  • Collaborates with external partners for events and program development
  • Maintains records, statistics and monthly reports
  • Ensures safe use of equipment and appropriate space and supplies
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job description

  • Province of Manitoba Class 4 Drivers License
  • Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), as well as Internet applications and other Information Technology
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility to facilitate changes in techniques and procedures
  • Demonstrated communication skills
  • Ability to respect and promote confidentiality
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position on a regular basis
  • Ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population
  • Ability to work effectively and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, clients and within interdisciplinary team

Position Summary

The activity/recreation worker will develop and provide recreation programs focused on promoting the health,wellness, and recovery (physical and mental) of the clients. The activity/recreation worker will work collaboratively and independently to provide services to the clients in partnership with clients, families and interdisciplinary team members in alignment with PMH vision, mission and values.

Responsibilities
Overview:
  • Plans, organizes and implements activity & recreation programs for clients and participants.
  • Organizes and implements group activities.
  • Provides instruction for selected tasks to develop knowledge and abilities.
  • Communicates information with interdisciplinary team members regarding client’s progress and revise plan as required.
  • Develops and implements creative activities for individuals and groups based on client interests, needs and wishes.
  • Engages with and work with external partners as appropriate for the development of activities/recreational events.
  • Ensures activity/recreational events that clients participate in are client focused related to the physical and mental wellbeing of the client.
  • Ensures that diagnosed or medical restrictions are followed during the activity/recreation event.
  • Develops of the monthly recreation/activity calendar.
  • Estimates, obtains and adapts space, equipment and supplies necessary to conduct scheduled activities.
  • Completes appropriate records/documentation including statistics as required.
  • Maintains activity program statistics and provides monthly reports.
  • Ensures a sufficient inventory of supplies are available to meet the activity program requirements by maintaining records of supplies used, and requisitioning for replacements as needed.
  • Assesses the potential for crisis situations and intervenes to de-escalate/defuse situations
  • Ensures equipment is used safely, stored appropriately, and maintained in good working order
  • Other duties as assigned.
