Job summary

Musqueam Indian Band is seeking a Recreation Manager to develop and maintain fitness and recreational programs for the Musqueam community. The role oversees two regular staff, casual employees, and over 10 student staff during summer, in a one-year term position.

Responsibilities include coordinating activities, managing budgets, hiring and supervising staff, and collaborating with Public Works, Facilities and other departments to ensure safe, engaging programs for Band members and the wider

Qualifications

  • Secondary School completion with a college certificate in Recreation or Physical Education, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years’ management experience and/or recreation program design and delivery.
  • Knowledge of fitness equipment and operations.
  • Knowledge of Musqueam or First Nations culture and history.
  • Budget preparation and funding proposal skills.
  • Ability to prepare and administer budgets and reports.
  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and licensed vehicle for work purposes.

Job description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Community Services, the Recreation Manager develops, implements, and maintains fitness and recreational programs for the Musqueam community. The Manager currently manages two regular staff, casual employees and more than 10 student employees during the summer months. This is a term position for one year.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Plans coordinates, organizes, develops recreational, athletic, fitness or sports activities, often in collaboration with other departments
  • Provides lifestyle awareness information
  • Leads groups and individuals in recreational or leisure activities. Assists with cultural activities held at the Musqueam Community Center
  • Assembles supplies and sports or game equipment. Instructs users in the proper use of various fitness or sports equipment
  • Monitors recreational or sports activities to ensure safety and provide emergency or first aid assistance when required
  • Prepares and distributes flyers and brochures for recreational activities
  • Schedules leagues and tournaments and enforce rules and policies of recreation programs
  • Hires, trains and supervises scheduling and evaluating permanent employee performance and summer staff
  • Hires, trains, and supervises casual staff as needed and maintains hiring records accordingly
  • Works with Public Works and Facilities to maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; distribute supplies and equipment; assist with ordering supplies and equipment for recreation programs
  • Prepares and maintains an annual departmental budget. Monitors expenditures and payroll in accordance with policies and procedures and budgets. Locates and successfully obtains outside sources of funding
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with Band members, colleagues and outside agencies
  • Keeps up to date on knowledge and trends of Recreation Programs that benefit members
  • Monitors recreation and fitness areas of the Musqueam Community Centre and ensures proper supervision of building by other regular and casual staff
  • Assists with the development and implementation of Policy and procedure
  • Develops and monitors implementation of procedures
  • Other related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skill and knowledge usually attained by successful completion of Secondary School, with a college certificate in Recreation or Physical Education; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • A minimum of two years’ management experience and/or a combination of Recreation program design and delivery
  • Knowledge of fitness equipment and how it works
  • Knowledge and experience of similar program delivery in the context of Musqueam or First Nations culture and history
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and alternate sources of funding; skills in locating sources for outside funding, preparation of funding proposals, and acquiring the funds
  • Skill and knowledge in developing and presenting program progress reports
  • Ability to prepare and administer budget, maintain records and prepare reports
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and organizational skills
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals
  • Skill in locating sources outside funding, preparation of funding proposals, and acquiring the funds
  • Skill and knowledge in development and presentation of program progress reports.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgement in dealing with sensitive and complex issues
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and the provision of a licensed vehicle for work purposes
  • Criminal Records Check
Working Conditions
  • The work is performed in an office environment as well as outdoors
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Participation in recreation activities
