Job summary

The City of Terrace is seeking a dedicated maintenance worker to care for the ice surface, parks, cemetery facilities and recreation spaces. You will flood ice, operate conditioning machines and perform related janitorial and minor repair duties.

You will also manage grounds upkeep, plantings, irrigation, and general facility maintenance, including snow removal and setting up events. The role requires physical stamina, reliable teamwork, and a valid drivers licence; weekend shifts are possible.

Qualifications

  • Secondary school graduation is required.
  • At least two years' related experience in ice making, janitorial, landscaping and facilities maintenance.
  • Refrigeration Basic Safety Awareness Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to operate related equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Good physical condition and ability to perform heavy manual labour.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations related to the work.
  • First Aid training is required.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete tasks.
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers and the public.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain ice surface, flood and operate ice conditioning equipment.
  • Perform parks and facilities maintenance, janitorial duties, and minor repairs.
  • Set up and take down for activities held in recreation facilities.
  • Maintain flower beds, trees, shrubs, trails and turf areas, including mowing and litter pickup.
  • Perform heavy manual duties including snow removal and moving furniture.
  • Identify hazards and report or correct them as needed.
  • Perform cemetery burial procedures and maintenance.
  • Operate related equipment for maintenance and janitorial tasks.
  • Ensure facilities are secure and vacated at end of day.
  • Assist in supervision and training of support staff.

Job description

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of the Working Foreman (Parks, Recreation & Culture Department), or his/her delegate, maintains the ice surface, maintains and cleans parks, cemetery facilities, and recreation facilities, and operates related equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
  1. Enforce facility rules and regulations to adhere to public health and safety, supervise public use of recreation facilities;
  2. Make ice surface and maintain ice including flooding, operating ice conditioning machines, ice painting, etc.;
  3. Perform parks and facilities maintenance including janitorial and minor repairs;
  4. Set up and take down for various activities held in the recreation facilities;
  5. Maintain flower beds, trees, shrubs, trails, turf areas, irrigation systems, playgrounds, parks and playing fields, including, but not limited to, weeding, mowing grass, litter pickup, pruning, fertilizing, etc., as required;
  6. Perform heavy manual duties, including, but not limited to, snow removal, gardening, moving tables, chairs, etc.;
  7. Identify hazards and perform corrective measures, and/or report hazards to supervisor;
  8. Perform burial procedures and maintenance at the cemetery;
  9. Operate equipment including, but not limited to, ice making, janitorial, parks and building maintenance;
  10. Enforce all rules and regulations regarding public health and safety;
  11. Ensure buildings and facilities are vacant and secure at end of day;
  12. Assist in supervision and training of support staff;
  13. Answer and act on public enquiries and complaints, as required;
  14. Maintain records and information, as required;
  15. Shift work is required, including weekends;
  16. Other related duties, as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  1. Secondary school graduation;
  2. Minimum of two years' related experience in ice making, janitorial, landscaping and facilities maintenance;
  3. Refrigeration Basic Safety Awareness Certificate or willing to obtain;
  4. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment safely and efficiently;
  5. Good physical condition and able to perform heavy manual labour;
  6. Good working knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations, as relates to the work involved;
  7. First Aid training;
  8. Ability to work independently and to accomplish tasks and assignments;
  9. Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public;
  10. Good written and oral communication skills;
  11. Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
