Job summary

West Coast Seniors Housing Management is seeking a Part-Time Temporary Recreation Aide for Summerland Seniors Village in Summerland, BC. The role supports planning, implementation and evaluation of activity programs for residents, ensuring dignity and rights are respected.

You will collaborate with the Therapeutic Recreation Manager, develop and publicize recreation activities, coordinate external groups, and assist residents and volunteers.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 Education.
• Two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or Health Care Aide with Recreation/Activity Certificate.
• Previous experience in a senior’s focused environment is an asset.
• Dementia course an asset.
• Valid First Aid Level 1 Certification.
• Serving It Right Certificate.
• Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset.
• Vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check required.
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and handle cleaning supplies.

Responsibilities

• Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing professional relationships to support organizational culture.
• Assist in development and evaluation of recreation programs.
• Publicize and carry out established recreation programs and events.
• Assist with monthly calendars, newsletters and coordination of in-house programs.
• Coordinate external groups to provide in-house programs.
• Assist residents with participation and portering as required.
• Maintain safety, infection control and documentation per policy.
• Participate in orientation of staff, volunteers, and new residents.

Job description

This position is covered under the HEABC wage levelling. Please note the wage is currently being adjusted and topped up by the government and the displayed wage is therefore reflective of such initiative.

Position: Part-Time Temporary - Long Term Care (Summerland Seniors Village - Summerland, BC)

Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 8:30am-1:30pm – 3 on and 4 off rotation

About The Role

The Recreation Aide reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/ Recreation Manager or designate. This role assists in planning, implementing and evaluating activity programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of persons served, while maintaining the rights of residents and ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.

Responsibilities

• Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
• Assists in the development of recreation and leisure services including program research development, implementation and evaluation.
• Promotes, publicizes and carries out established recreation programs such as outings, exercises, crafts, social events, entertainment, games.
• Assists in the completion and posting of monthly calendars and newsletters outlining programs and services available to residents/tenants and families.
• Coordinates external groups to provide in-house programs.
• Assists residents and provide portering to and from programs as required
• Observes, documents and reports any changes in residents to the supervisor and/or nurse.
• Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through:
• accident prevention,
• knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations,
• the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and
• Utilizing infection control procedures
• Maintains appropriate documentation as per policy and procedures, confidentiality and security.
• Actively participates in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees and educational in-services.
• Assists in the maintenance of statistical records using programs such as Activity Pro, Point Click Care, etc.
• Assists with orientation of new residents and encourages residents to participate or volunteer in their own community.
• Provides guidance, assistance and support to volunteers, while assists in the evaluation of volunteers.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills

• Grade 12 Education
• A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or at a minimum a Health Care Aide with a Recreation/Activity Certificate.
• Previous experience in a senior’s focused environment an asset.
• Dementia course an asset.
• Valid First Aid Level 1 Certification.
• Serving It Right Certificate.
• Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset
• All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
• Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaners, detergents and other cleaning equipment.
• Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
• Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Basic computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
• Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver’s License.
