Job description

Powerex Corp. is the wholly owned energy marketing subsidiary of BC Hydro, responsible for marketing clean electricity across North America. We are seeking an experienced Quantitative Analyst with a background in Operations Research to join our Analytics team. This role is ideal for someone who combines deep analytical expertise with strong programming skills and a passion for applying both to complex, real-world energy market problems. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, self-driven, and comfortable delivering rigorous analysis in a fast-paced trading environment.

Reporting to the Director, Analytics, you will work closely with traders and senior analysts to support Front Office operations through mathematical modelling, deal valuation, data analysis, and tool development. Your primary function will be to support and maintain existing mathematical programming models and to develop new ones from concept to implementation. This position will be relied upon to support the achievement of our purpose and long-term goals by fostering our values: teamwork, accountability, integrity, service, ingenuity, and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and enhance existing mathematical programming models, ensuring reliability, accuracy, and alignment with evolving business needs.
  • Design and develop new quantitative models from concept through to implementation, applying operations research techniques to real-world energy market problems.
  • Perform deal valuation and quantitative analysis to support Front Office trading decisions.
  • Build and maintain analytical tools and data pipelines that support trading operations and workflows.
  • Conduct data analysis using large datasets, extracting insights that inform trading strategy and risk assessment.
  • Collaborate with traders, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into analytical solutions.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Front Office tools, models, and processes through innovation and automation.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and communicate findings effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support ad-hoc analytical requests while managing longer-term modelling projects in parallel.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in a field such as Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • At least five years of quantitative analytical work experience, a substantial portion of which has been specifically in operations research. Candidates without a formal operations research background will be considered provided they demonstrate sufficient quantitative and technical experience and aptitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve challenging technical problems without the guarantee of adequate or perfect information, delivering both quick ad-hoc solutions and long-term in-depth models.
  • Experience solving real-world problems by translating them into constraints represented by computer models.
  • Strong grounding in probability and statistics, and the judgement to know which methods fit a given problem.
  • Ability to explain quantitative reasoning to traders and commercial staff, and to defend it under challenge.
  • Expert-level proficiency in MS Excel and at least one data visualization or dashboarding tool such as Tableau.
  • Scripting experience in a mathematical programming language, ideally AMPL & CPLEX.
  • Programming experience in at least one of VBA, Python, C++/C#, or SQL (Snowflake, dbt).
  • Proven experience working with large datasets and managing end-to-end data pipelines.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, and thrive under pressure in a fast-paced, open work environment.
Preferred
  • A Master's degree in Operations Research or another analytical field, and/or successful completion of a professional development program such as a CFA.
  • Experience in the energy industry.
  • Experience working with LLMs such as Claude to support research and the development of tools, models, and data pipelines.
  • Knowledge or experience in hydrology, hydropower engineering, time-series forecasting, or general data science.
Work arrangements & other requirements
  • Full-time, in-office position based at our Vancouver, BC office
  • Must be located in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland area.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • A background check and references will be required for the position.
What We Offer
  • Compensation: The expected salary range for this role is $109,680 - $148,400
  • Comprehensive benefits package including extended health, dental, vision, and pension.
  • Opportunity to work at the intersection of advanced quantitative analysis and North America's energy markets, contributing directly to Front Office trading and decision-making.
  • A collaborative, innovation-driven environment that embraces modern analytical tools, AI, and emerging technologies in energy trading.
  • Professional development support, including funding for relevant certifications, training, and continuing education.
