Job summary

NWI Precision, a Toronto-based leader in precision machining for aerospace and nuclear components, seeks an experienced Quality Engineer to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications and quality standards.

You will implement inspection plans, lead corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement with Lean and Six Sigma methods, mentoring junior staff and coordinating with suppliers and customers to uphold the Quality First through Zero Variation mindset.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of quality machining experience.
  • Leadership experience with 3+ years preferred.
  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma knowledge (Green/Black belt asset).
  • Experience in Measurement System Analysis and gauge R&R.
  • Proficient in statistics and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and quality documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and monitor standardized work for engineering and manufacturing processes.
  • Lead audits and NCRs, and coordinate corrective actions.

Job description

NWI Precision specializes in high-precision machining of helicopter masts, turbine shafts, engine thrust links, and nuclear pressure vessel components for the aerospace and nuclear industries worldwide. Operating from a 120,000 sq. ft. facility at 9 Fenmar Drive in Toronto, our dedicated team is committed to delivering the highest quality products to specifications and on time. We are seeking an experienced Quality Engineer to join our team.

The Quality Engineer is responsible to implement effective quality controls, train team members how to use them, and monitor outcomes to ensure compliance with drawing, specification and quality standard requirements. They interact daily with both internal and external customers and suppliers to develop quality plans and perform root cause and corrective action functions. They are a champion of a “Quality First through Zero Variation” mindset.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of standardized work across the team in support of engineering and manufacturing processes.
  • Attend meetings as required, and represent the functional team as a source of technical and procedural expertise to internal and external associates.
  • Facilitate effectiveness of cross-functional team work, liaise and coordinate with other departments and ensure necessary information is shared for seamless and integrated efforts among cross-functional teams
  • Ensure that team members, particularly new team members, are adequately mentored and supported by the team.
  • Strive to develop processes that lead to zero production defects.
  • Apply technical expertise to analyze, select, and implement inspection plans, processes, and gaging.
  • Complete additional projects and responsibilities as required.
Technical DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Implement methods to inspect, test and evaluate the reliability of manufacturing processes, products and production equipment.
  • Collect data and analyze failure, corrective and preventive actions to respond to existing and potential manufacturing problems and issues. Collaborate with other stakeholders to recommend and implement corrective and preventative actions and monitor the effectiveness of the results.
  • Responsible for continuous improvement activities and lean methods, to improve quality processes and procedures
  • Support Quality Inspectors in order to ensure products and processes comply with the relevant quality management system requirements
  • Create and maintain company quality documentation such as quality standards and QA related reports. Lead training sessions in support of those standards
  • Conduct internal and external audits, including closing out audit findings, creating reports and determining proper corrective and preventive actions. This includes preparation and participation in customer and regulating body audits.
  • Initiate and review non-conformance reports (NCRs).Ensure that NCRs are completed correctly and that corrective actions have been assigned to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Lead MRB teams to disposition containment, corrective and preventative actions.
  • Submit non-conforming requests to customers and vendors and work with respective peers on NCR dispositions.
  • Develop and maintain, in coordination with Manufacturing Engineering and Operations, MITP’s and ITPs, including obtaining customer approvals.
  • Manage First Article Inspection Reporting (FAIR) processes, including submissions to customers and maintain change control verification of the FAI/PPQ records.
  • Provide witnessing and verification inspections and certification of manufacturing operations as required
  • Compile, review, verify, certify and submit final permanent manufacturing records (history dockets and history files) to customer.
  • Configure and maintain quality record retention and retrieval.
  • Be a subject matter expert in customer contractual specifications, CSA N285, CSA N299 and associated nuclear codes.
  • Foster relationships with customers to ensure program requirements are fully incorporated into the Quality Program and implemented
  • Working with the manager for creating training programs and build quality awareness across the site.
  • Interfacing with Engineering and Operations to ensure production of new products are in accordance with approved data
  • Conduct audits, including closing out audit findings, creating audits finding reports and determine proper corrective and preventive actions
  • Analyze failure, corrective and preventive action to respond to manufacturing and customer complaints

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Certificate or degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Quality or Process Engineering.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5+ years related work experience in a tightly controlled quality machining environment, within a manufacturing quality team
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership role is preferred
  • Experience in Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma (Green or Black belt Certification is an asset)
  • Highly experienced in conducting Measurement System Analysis and gauge R&R activities
  • Experience with statistical data analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Quality Management Systems
  • Knowledge of data base quality systems and reporting
  • Solid knowledge of ERP/MRP systems.
Skills and Competencies
  • Proficient with GD&T
  • Understand manufacturing processes and the engineering intent of the product being produced
  • Strong technical knowledge of precision machining and manufacturing methods, including experience with various metals such as titanium, Inconel, and hardened steels.
  • Excellent technical communication skills with engineers and manufacturing personnel
  • Strong attention to detail and mathematical abilities
  • Able to work within strict deadlines
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.
  • Ability to conduct analysis, prepare reports, problem solve.
  • Must be thorough and accurate with an attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to present a professional self-image and maintain confidential information.
