The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) provides provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, prevention, and consultation. BCCDC collaborates with public health partners to identify and respond to BC's public health priorities, which may evolve over time. The Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Services (IPVPDS) focuses on provincial immunization programs, vaccine preventable diseases, and invasive Group A Streptococcus disease through surveillance, policy development, and partner engagement.
The position of Public Health Physician & Medical Director is a permanent role, working with the IPVPDS. The Medical Director role is a five-year, renewable appointment.
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Public Health Physician & Medical Director provides medical leadership to the IPVPDS, supporting strategic activities, policies, programs, and practices. The role involves providing expertise in immunization programs and vaccine preventable diseases, supporting public health network strengthening, and collaborating with communities, health authorities, Indigenous organizations, and government stakeholders to address emerging issues.
This role supports the development, monitoring, and evaluation of public health policies, ensuring quality service delivery, compliance with standards, and engagement in quality improvement activities. The Medical Director offers senior medical oversight, maintains key partnerships, and contributes to the strategic direction of BCCDC as part of the senior leadership team.
Applicants must be eligible for licensure as a specialist in BC and hold RCPSC certification or equivalent in a relevant field such as community medicine, public health, infectious diseases, or occupational medicine.
Minimum of 5 years' experience in public health-related fields, including response to environmental health issues and policy development. Deep knowledge of regulatory agencies, legislation, and public health processes is required. Strong medical judgment, understanding of health authority structures, excellent communication, collaboration skills, and experience with budgeting and quality control are essential.
The successful candidate will be recommended for a faculty appointment at the University of British Columbia, with rank determined by qualifications.
