The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) provides provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, prevention, and consultation, offering direct diagnostic and treatment services for diseases of public health importance. BCCDC collaborates with public health partners to identify and respond to provincial health priorities, which may evolve over time. The Public Health Response (PHR) service line focuses on disease and policy surveillance, partner engagement, and program development.
The position of Public Health Physician & Medical Director is a permanent role, working with the PHR service line. The Medical Director role is a five-year, renewable term.
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Public Health Physician & Medical Director provides medical leadership, supports strategic activities, policies, programs, and practices, and offers expertise on emerging public health issues such as risk assessment, pandemic response, and outbreak management. The role involves collaboration with communities, health authorities, Indigenous organizations, and government bodies to address health issues.
The role also includes public health emergency management, policy development, quality improvement, and ensuring compliance with standards. The Medical Director provides senior oversight to staff, maintains partnerships, and contributes to leadership and strategic planning at BCCDC.
Applicants must be eligible for licensure as a specialist in British Columbia, hold RCPSC certification or equivalent in fields like community medicine, public health, infectious diseases, or occupational medicine. They should be eligible for appointment as senior clinical faculty at UBC or another BC institution. A minimum of 10 years' experience in public health-related fields, extensive practical experience in environmental health issues, and knowledge of regulatory frameworks are required. Strong communication, collaboration, budgeting, and quality control skills are essential.
