BC Hydro is seeking a Project Engineer Specialist – Transmission Engineering (Multiple Disciplines) to lead engineering work for major capital projects from conception to commissioning. The role requires strong leadership, cross‑functional collaboration, and proven experience with transmission substations and lines.

The successful candidate will plan scopes, manage schedules and costs, and coordinate with internal teams and external consultants.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred; other disciplines may be considered with relevant experience on large infrastructure projects.
• P.Eng eligibility with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC) is required or immediate eligibility.
• Minimum 10 years of engineering experience, preferably in transmission stations and lines.

Responsibilities

• Plan and manage the engineering scope, schedule, and cost of large capital projects with high profile and risk.
• Establish design and review plans, strategies, schedules, and resource requirements for engineering work.
• Coordinate and oversee reports, technical specifications, drawings, and contractor work; lead owner’s reviews and manage third-party contributions.

• The candidate will be responsible for planning and managing the engineering component (Scope, Schedule, and Cost) of large capital projects with considerable profile, technical complexity, and risk. The projects may involve work designed entirely within BC Hydro, entirely outside of BC Hydro, or through a combination of both. Typical projects include new or upgraded transmission substations and lines and associated protection, controls, and communication systems.
• The candidate will establish design and review plans, strategies, schedules, and resource requirements for the engineering work on assigned projects and work with functional managers to establish project teams. The candidate will coordinate and oversee the development of reports, technical specifications, and drawings and may manage engineering consultant’s contracts. The candidate will also work with teams within and outside of BC Hydro to ensure technical support is provided during manufacturing, construction, and commissioning and that technical issues are resolved.
• The candidate will perform the Owner’s Engineer Lead role on projects where some or all engineering work is completed by a third party, such as an outside consultant or equipment vendor, and will coordinate and lead the internal review and acceptance of third-party work.
• The candidate will maintain collaborative relationships across the organization and use an understanding of business requirements and processes to lead engineering work. The candidate will make or review recommendations on complex project matters, which may include presenting to senior management and the executive.
• The candidate will be responsible for coaching project team members to help resolve issues and mentoring and coaching others, either within the department or in other groups.

Job Requirements

• The candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, which is preferred; other disciplines may be considered in conjunction with relevant experience on complex large infrastructure projects.
• The candidate must be eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
• The candidate must have a minimum of 10 years of engineering experience, preferably including experience designing transmission stations and lines projects.
• The candidate will be considered favourably if they have engineering experience through the total project life cycle, from conceptual design through to testing and commissioning. Candidates with less experience may be considered at a corresponding position level.
• The candidate must have a minimum of 4 years of experience leading and coordinating multi-discipline design on medium to large projects, preferably on projects similar in nature to BC Hydro in terms of size, complexity, and stakeholders. Candidates with less experience may be considered at a corresponding position level.
• The candidate must have the ability to understand the impact of the project on the transmission system and operations and the interactions and priorities required to deliver multi-discipline projects.
• The candidate must have excellent leadership, communication, and influencing skills.
• The candidate must have a good understanding of Project Management processes. Strong knowledge of BC Hydro’s project delivery processes and design practice is considered an asset.
• The candidate should have experience managing Owner’s reviews of multi-discipline engineering work performed externally, which is considered an asset.
• The candidate should bring site experience from large construction projects, particularly hydroelectric generation stations, transmission substations, or transmission lines, as an asset.
• The candidate must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Work conditions

• The candidate will be required to travel occasionally across BC.
• The candidate will work in a hybrid role based at BC Hydro’s Edmonds campus in Burnaby, BC, with a minimum of 3 days per week required in the office.
