Job summary

Waterfront Toronto is seeking a Project Accountant to join our PMO and support both project management and accounting teams. The role focuses on accurate financial data management and timely processing of commitments and costs to advance city-building projects.

A post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field and a minimum of 3 years in project accounting within a large organization are required. Strong Excel and ERP experience preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of project/job cost accounting in an A/E/C environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce accurate work.

  • Expedite submission and review of project financial documentation, including invoices and payment requests.
  • Verify invoice accuracy, billing rates, calculations, contract compliance and cost-to-date reporting.
  • Validate change order billings against approved change orders in Dynamics 365 and resolve discrepancies.
  • Review and process consultants’ rate increases and new personnel additions.
  • Manage electronic invoice approval workflow and ERP entry in Dynamics 365.
  • Prepare accruals, allocate overhead costs, and assist with project closeout.

The Opportunity: Project Accountant

Waterfront Toronto is seeking a Project Accountant to join our Program Management Office (PMO). This role will provide critical support to project and program management and accounting teams by ensuring accurate financial data management and timely processing of commitments and costs, enabling the advancement of transformative city-building projects.

This position is responsible for supporting both the program/project management and accounting teams, by compiling and maintaining project data and carrying out day-to-day operational activities including the following:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Expedite submission and review of project financial documentation, including invoices and payment requests.
  • Review and verify invoice accuracy, including billing rates, calculations, contract compliance, cost-to-date reporting, previous invoicing, and supporting documentation such as billing breakdowns, statutory declarations, and WSIB clearances.
  • Validate change order billings against approved change orders in D365 and collaborate with vendors, Procurement, and project teams to investigate and resolve invoice discrepancies.
  • Review and process consultants’ rate increases and new personnel additions.
  • Manage electronic invoice approval workflow and ensure timely coding and entry into ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics 365).
  • Prepare accruals, allocate overhead costs, and assist with project closeout activities.
  • Generate cost reports and respond to ad hoc financial queries.
  • Support audits and contribute to process improvements in project controls and accounting.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • A post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, or Project Management.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in accounts payable or project accounting within a large organization.
  • Strong knowledge of project/job cost accounting in an A/E/C environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel; experience with ERP systems (experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 considered an asset).
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to produce accurate, high-quality work and identify errors, discrepancies, or omissions.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in construction accounting or consulting is considered a strong asset.

*This represents the expected hiring range and does not represent the full pay range for this position. The salary offered may be higher than the posted range depending on several factors such as relevant skills, qualifications, and experience.

Work Location:

During this time, Waterfront Toronto is operating in a hybrid work environment. Employees are currently required to work in our office three days per week and have the option to work remotely for the remainder of the week. This is subject to change by the Corporation.
