Job summary

Calgary Humane Society is seeking a Camp Counselor to deliver humane education activities for children and youth. This part-time role supports camps, tours, birthday parties, and presentations, with a focus on safety, engagement, and animal welfare.

You will work a flexible schedule (20–24 hours/week), assist with program materials, coordinate animal visits, and model respectful, compassionate interactions while communicating clearly with parents and presenters.

Qualifications

• Flexible schedule with shifting shifts.
• Over 18 and able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Experience with children.
• Excellent customer service and communication.
• Current First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and conduct Humane Education activities and presentations teaching children and youth about the interconnectedness of animals, people, and our environment.
• Be a camp ‘floater’ and ‘runner’ as necessary.
• Pick up shifts to cover Camp Counsellor absences.
• Assist with preparing and hosting presentations on and off site.
• Safely facilitate groups of one to thirty children, youth and/or adults through shelter tours, camps, presentations, birthday parties, and other educational programming at CHS.
• Coordinate animal guests and visits with presentations while maintaining the safety of all guests.
• Assist with responding to humane education inquiries and bookings and other administration duties as necessary.
• Help develop and maintain program materials (presentations, activity sheets, hand-outs, etc.).
• Provide support and coverage for youth programs including tours, birthdays, and camps.
• Provide department support such as attending events, tours, animal handling, etc.
• Teach and model positive animal interactions, responsible pet ownership and respect for all living things.
• Assist with overall organization and cleaning.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job description

CHS education programsare a place where kids connect with animals. Our goal is to provide anopportunity for children to interact and learn about the animals that share ourworld. Through our camps, clubs,presentations, birthday parties, tours and more, children will have enrichingexperiences filled with fun activities, some hands-on animal encounters, andlots of crafts. As they have fun, participants learn respect, compassion, empathyand how to provide a lifetime of care for companion animals.

Rotation:

• 20-24 hours per week
• Work schedule will be dependent on department needs and bookings

Salary:

• $18.65 per hour, increase to $20.60 per hour upon successful completion of the probationary period

Position Requirements:

• Flexible schedule as shifts will fluctuate
• Minimum high school diploma preferred
• Over 18 – must be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check
• Successful candidate will be required to complete an enhanced police information check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS
• Previous experience working with children
• Ability to maintain strong rapport will all age levels
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to professionally communicate with parents, presenters, colleagues as well as children and youth
• Genuine concern for the welfare of animals, people and the environment
• Genuine interest in the education of young people
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing and comfortable with public speaking
• Current First Aid certification required

Physical Requirements:

• Comfortable and capable of handling a variety of species (e.g., cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, rodents)
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to perform repetitive motions: sitting, standing, reaching, lifting, squatting, bending, walking, and pulling
