Job summary

Milton is seeking a part-time program instructor to plan and deliver quality recreational classes for youth. Reporting to the Coordinator, Cultural Services or Coordinator, Recreation, you will create engaging lessons that are safe, fun and appropriate for the age group.

Responsibilities include implementing programs with a strong customer focus, maintaining a safe environment, adapting activities, supervising volunteers, and keeping attendance and administrative records.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years teaching or program instruction experience.
  • Experience working with targeted age group.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C required.
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development required.
  • Certifications/workshops in related field assets.
  • CPI or related crisis prevention training is an asset.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator, Cultural Services or Coordinator, Recreation, this part‑time position is responsible for the planning and instruction of quality programs, ensuring that all activities are safe, fun and appropriate for the targeted age group and expectations of the department.

Major Job Responsibilities
  • Program implementation with a focus on quality customer experiences:
  • Ensure a safe and well-supervised learning environment is provided, while encouraging individuals to actively participate
  • Work with the Supervisor, to develop structured programs that meet the needs of the participants
  • Facilitate a lecture and or demonstration of an assigned topic at each class
  • Ensure daily programming is adapted to all program participant needs
  • Receive all parent/participant (as applicable based on programming) concerns and communicate concerns or incidents to supervisor
  • Provide sufficient time for participants to work independently and provide one‑on‑one assistance when required
  • Establish positive relationships and work cooperatively with staff and participants and provide clear communication
  • Provide guidance and oversight of volunteers
  • Establish positive relationships and clear communication channels with all staff and participants
  • Maintain a safe and clean facility including proper usage and use of equipment. Proactively communicate programme needs to operations staff and communicate any facility or equipment deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Evaluate situations for potential risks and proactively take action to address such risks. Communicate any action or concerns to supervisor.
  • Maintain communication with customer service desk to provide relevant program updates and to request support in the event of an emergency
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and handle sensitive situations with mature judgement.
  • Provides suggestions to supervisor on ways to enhance the customer experience
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Administrative Tasks:
  • Develop and prepare a material list and lesson plans to meet the needs of the program and participants
  • Modify lesson plans as necessary based on program participant needs
  • Provide lesson plans, regular updates and feedback to immediate Supervisor
  • Attend all mandatory staff functions: training, meetings and all allocated program times
  • Report any incidents, to the Supervisor, ensuring all appropriate forms are filled out accurately and completed
  • Submit required forms (including payroll)
  • Maintain accurate attendance and other administrative records as required
Education & Experience
  • Secondary School Diploma Preferred
  • Post‑Secondary Education related to specialized field is preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years teaching/program instruction experience
  • Experience working with targeted age group Certifications or Designations is an asset
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (children's programs)
  • Certifications/workshops in a related field and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or equivalent is as asset
  • Expert knowledge and aptitude in a specific area of interest (e.g. art history, including contemporary practice, languages, music, dance, wellness)
  • Master level expertise in variety of techniques and practice specific to the area of interest (e.g. painting, drawing, ceramics, pottery, hand building, clay sculpture, languages, music, dance, wellness)
  • Expert in one or more artistic techniques, practices and materials in a minimum of one area of the following interests/skills: painting, drawing, ceramics, pottery, hand building, clay sculpture)
