Job summary

Dawson College invites applications for teaching opportunities in Voice and Singing within the Department of Professional Theatre. The successful candidate will teach Voice & Speech and Singing, and provide basic vocal and acting direction for college productions.

Ideal candidates will blend vocal technique pedagogy with Shakespearean text work, dialect training, and ensemble coaching across genres, while supporting a daily personal singing regimen for students.

Qualifications

• MA/MFA in Theatre or university degree with years of professional theatre experience.
• Demonstrable teaching ability or potential as determined through interview.
• College-level teaching experience is strongly recommended.
• Excellent English communication skills are essential.
• D.E.C. in Theatre is an asset.
• General knowledge of French is an asset.

Job Description and Tasks

The Department of Professional Theatre is seeking candidates for teaching opportunities with a focus on Voice and Singing. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching Voice & Speech and Singing, as well as providing basic vocal and acting direction for public performances or presentations.

The successful candidate will help students assimilate and integrate vocal skills into practical performance situations; develop sophisticated vocalization exercises and personal warm-ups; acquire Standard North American speech; and develop advanced creative control of the vocal instrument. The candidate must be comfortable with dialect work and Shakespearean texts, and have a specialization in Singing, with the ability to teach vocal technique, singing components and musical characteristics across various genres, direct ensemble singing, and coach students in developing a personal daily singing training regimen.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working across this interdisciplinary specialty and integrating voice, speech, singing, and acting skills in support of the actor’s overall performance practice. This role encompasses teaching and providing some musical accompaniment in-class for pedagogical purposes.

In addition to your regular teaching duties, your responsibilities would include:

• Involvement in pedagogical days organized by the College.

Required Qualifications

• MA/MFA in Theatre in relevant discipline and three (3) years professional experience in a relevant field OR University degree in relevant (theatre-related) discipline and five (5) years professional experience in a relevant field.
• Demonstrable teaching ability/potential in one or more Professional Theatre teaching categories (to be determined through the interview process and documentation).
• Teaching experience at the college level strongly recommended.
• Excellent English communication skills essential.
• D.E.C. in Theatre an asset.
• General knowledge of French is an asset.
