Job description

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:

TÜV SÜD Canada is seeking a full time, Product Safety Engineer to support Services in Canada.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Determine project scope, develop a preliminary plan of investigation, and determine project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.
  2. Projects may include travelling to witness/oversee execution of tests at client or TÜV SÜD sites.
  3. Perform Product component evaluation/confirmation at client or TÜV SÜD sites.
  4. Perform/oversee and monitor product assessments to applicable requirements.
  5. Conduct technical file reviews utilizing analytical skills and technical knowledge, record the review findings, and prepare the client report; all in a timely manner.
  6. Review product design, engineering, and manufacturing while documenting any deficiencies.
  7. Acting as principal intermediary between the client and the operating areas, from the beginning to the end of both single discipline and one-stop projects.
  8. Communicate with the client about technical issues and the progress of the review.
  9. Maintain proficiency on global regulatory requirements and develop and maintain rapport with regulatory reviewers and project team members.
  10. Involve experts (Battery, Environmental, Energy, etc.), as needed, in the execution of product reviews and in accordance with standards and regulations.
  11. Work with minimal supervision and be able to assess compliance to the regulatory requirements.
  12. Analyze complex regulatory requirements and make sound determinations of the proper course of action.
  13. Collect and document data in accordance with applicable test procedures and requirements. (In the form of a Test Report Form, analyze Test Data Sheets, graphical information, or others as defined by applicable project scope).
  14. Ensure project timelines are adhered to, by completing work within the time allocated.
  15. Written and oral communication must be delivered in a prompt and effective manner to internal and external customers which includes, but not limited to; answering technical questions, relaying messages and providing information related to standards and test procedures, communicating with engineers performing testing.
  16. Assist with review and preparation of passive propagation, external short circuit, overcharge, over discharge, over temperature, various cycling requirements, drop testing, roll over, thermal shock, immersion, crush, post-test tear down, and other relevant tests on industrial electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
  17. Follow testing standards, such as UL 62368, UL 61010, UL1973, UL2580, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 2231-1/2, UL 2594, UL 2202, UL 9741, UL 3030, UL 1740, UL 3100 and others.
  18. Maintain confidentiality of customers, products tested, and appropriate internal information.
  19. Lead meetings with clients to discuss project updates and test-specific issues, if applicable.
  20. Innovate existing and develop new testing techniques and procedures.
  21. Ensure consumable materials comply with applicable requirements.
  22. Perform Project reviews and conduct testing as needed.
  23. Maintain confidentiality of customers, products tested, and appropriate internal information.
  24. Ensure compliance with established work standards and practices, including the use of all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  25. Keep abreast of present and future product requirements, test procedures, instrumentation, technology and TÜV SÜD Engineering service capabilities by internal training sessions, external seminars and reading of technical articles.
  26. Adhere to all TÜV SÜD policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  1. Ability to apply and understand basic electrical and/or mechanical concepts.
  2. Must be highly observant and pay attention to detail.
  3. Electrical/Electronic products Testing & Certification experience.
  4. Ability to work well under pressure and adhere to tight deadlines.
  5. Self-starter with a positive outlook and motivated attitude.
EDUCATION:
  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent with experience combination.
EXPERIENCE:
  1. In-depth knowledge of national and international electrical product safety standards; preferably standards associated with electric vehicle charging, batteries, energy storage systems, etc.
  2. Minimum of 5 years working in a laboratory conducting electrical safety testing.
  3. Knowledge of applicable standards committees.
  4. Good familiarity with many types of test equipment.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  6. Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  7. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  8. Project management experience is desirable.
