The Opportunity
As Product Designer of the Common Design System at Manulife, you will play a key role in a Global Design System team responsible for scaling and maintaining the enterprise-wide design library that serves multiple business units across Canada, Asia, and the US. This system will enable consistency, efficiency, accessibility, and innovation across Manulife’s digital experiences. You will partner closely with design, engineering, and product teams across regions to define the visual language, interaction patterns, and usability guidelines that ensure a seamless, high-quality experience for millions of users.

This role requires deep expertise in design tokens, enterprise design systems, templating for CMS like AEM, accessibility, and design operations. You will align with the human-centered design team, other business segments, and advocate for system adoption to enable teams to work more efficiently and creatively. The ideal candidate has successfully worked on enterprise-wide design systems and understands the organizational, technical, and cultural complexities involved.

Position Responsibilities

• Design System Library Maintainer: Build components, patterns, and templates using a tokens-based approach supporting Manulife’s digital transformation, advocating for design excellence, accessibility, and usability.
• Align with visual language, interaction patterns, and documentation to ensure high-quality experience.
• Partner with design leads and engineering teams to align component and pattern requirements.

Governance, Adoption & Enablement

• Uphold governance, contribution, and adoption models for the design library.
• Embed the design system into product workflows across global teams.
• Follow best practices to ensure consistency and scalability, considering multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and regulatory challenges.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Serve as a design system advocate.
• Collaborate with regional design leads to meet regional needs while maintaining overall consistency.
• Build and nurture a global design system community, educating teams on best practices.

Technical & Operational Execution

• Expertise in design tooling, documentation, and workflows ensuring seamless integration with platforms like Figma, Storybook, React, AEM.
• Work with engineering to ensure design-to-code consistency and accessibility compliance.
• Manage external partnerships and vendors as needed.
• Facilitate design reviews, audits, and contribution models.
• Support community engagement to promote system adoption.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years in design, design systems, or enterprise product design, preferably in a global organization.
• Experience or training in design at a post-secondary or technical institution.
• Proven experience with enterprise-wide design systems.
• Deep expertise in UI/UX, accessibility (WCAG), and design-to-development collaboration.
• Proficiency in enterprise design tools (Figma, Storybook, React, AEM).
• Experience handling multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and regulatory complexities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with Agile, Lean UX, and enterprise delivery models.
• Experience with governance, adoption strategies, and design system operations.
• Experience in complex matrixed organizations.
