Job summary

Homeward-Trust-Edmonton is seeking a hands-on Donation Center Associate to represent the organization at the Donor Door, sort and process donated items, and help donors with their donations. You will evaluate items, price them, and keep the workspace clean and safe.

The role requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, perform outdoors/indoors work, and maintain exemplary customer service. Training and WHMIS compliance are provided, with flexibility to work weekends and evenings.

Responsibilities

  • Welcomes donors to Find with a smile within ten seconds of arrival.
  • Carries donations and assists donors with donations.
  • Notifies donors of what can and cannot be accepted and offers alternatives.
  • Sorts and directs items into proper areas and bins.
  • Evaluates quality, condition, and appearance of items.
  • Cleans and repairs items per policies and procedures.
  • Prices items using established guidelines and tags them.
  • Maintains store and department cleanliness.
  • Ensures functionality of electronic/mechanical items.
  • Loads/unloads furniture safely with equipment.
  • Processes hard furniture with cleaning and minor repairs.
  • Performs furniture inspections as trained.
  • Safely using tools to repair, tighten or disassemble furniture.
  • Participates in training and maintains WHMIS safety and paperwork.
  • Covers donation doors to assist donors and moves items from vehicles to warehouse.

About You

At your core, you should be passionate about helping people. We work with a diverse group of people to help our most vulnerable friends transition out of homelessness and into their new home through the Housing First program and human connection is a must. You are excited about unboxing and finding treasures. You enjoy cleaning, sorting, organizing, and also possess the ability to have tough conversations with donors when we can not take donations that align with our mission.

What You’ll Do

This role is responsible for representing Find as the primary contact with donors at the Donor Door, sorting and taking in donated items and ensuring they are placed in their appropriate areas according to established standards. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Welcomes donors to Find with a smile and within ten (10) seconds of their arrival in a helpful and friendly fashion.
  • Carries donations and/or assists donors with donations.
  • Notifies donor of what can and cannot be accepted, explain why donations must be refused and provide alternative donation options in the area.
  • Sort and direct items received into proper designated areas and bins
  • Evaluate household items for quality, condition, and visual appearance
  • Clean and repair items as per established policies and procedure
  • Price items by following established pricing guidelines and affix price tags to items as required
  • Maintain store and department cleanliness by sweeping, dusting and removing unusable items
  • Ensure the functionality of electronic/mechanical items
  • Load/unload furniture safely utilizing all required materials and/or equipment/straps available
  • Process hard furniture by cleaning/dusting/minor repairs as required
  • Performing furniture inspections as provided by in-house training, showing discretion and professionalism in accepting or denying donations
  • Safely using tools to repair, tighten or disassemble furniture
  • Participate in established training and maintain WHMIS safety and paperwork requirements
  • Cover donation doors to assist donors with their items. Removing items from vehicles and into our warehouse in a safe and professional manner

Must Haves
  • Minimum of High School or GED equivalent
  • Open and transparent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Availability Monday through Sunday with flexibility to work evening as required
  • Experience in excellent customer service

  • Experience and understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the state of homelessness in Edmonton and across the country is an asset.
