Job summary

Okta is hiring a Principal Engineer (P5) to lead the Developer Platform and drive architecture for scalable, reliable backend systems. You will own platform direction, mentor engineers, and partner with tech leads to align the wider platform for developers and AI agents.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience as Principal or Staff level contributor.
• Experience designing and operating high-scale backend and event-driven systems.
• Platform thinking for developer-facing systems at scale.
• Deep understanding of identity and access management (IAM).
• Ability to own vaguely specified problems and drive direction.
• Strong Node.js fundamentals; Go is a plus.
• Hands-on with agentic tooling or LLM-facing design.
• Cross-functional collaboration across engineering, product, and architecture.

Responsibilities

• Own the platform architecture and cross-cutting decisions that keep it coherent.
• Design distributed systems for throughput, reliability, and consistency.
• Turn vague problems into clear, modular technical designs.
• Shape the platform for both developers and agents to build on.
• Raise engineering standards and lead deep design reviews.
