Job summary

Kwantlen Polytechnic University is seeking a Pride Peers volunteer who will provide confidential peer support and guidance to 2SLGBTQIA+ students. The role focuses on safe spaces, resource referral and campus referrals, under the Office of Equity and Inclusive Communities.

This student role is reserved for KPU students only and involves up to 15 hours per week with a flexible schedule, including occasional campus travel and weekend activities.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of at least one year at a post-secondary institution or one semester at KPU.
  • Must be a current KPU student in good academic standing.
  • Must self-identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
  • Experience or interest in 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of campus resources.
  • Interest in promoting awareness, education and safe spaces.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • Experience with event planning is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Be available to support students at Pride spaces on KPU campuses at scheduled times.
  • Assist in development, administration and evaluation of the Pride Peers Program, including creating resources, activities, discussions, workshops and events.
  • Provide social support and referrals to students using campus and external resources.
  • Attend team meetings, trainings and PD opportunities.
  • Promote the program and participate in on-campus outreach.
  • Help raise awareness around sexual and gender diversity issues.
  • Attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Present to groups of up to 30 participants.
  • Work up to 15 hours per week with a flexible schedule.
  • Occasional travel between campuses and to off-campus activities/events, including weekends.

Job description

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

This role reports to the Specialist, Gender and Sexual Equity, in the Office of Equity and Inclusive Communities.

SUMMARY

The Pride Peers is a peer to peer program with a specialized focus on supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ students and providing them with a safe and confidential space at KPU. The Pride Peers do not provide counselling, but they do provide confidential support, listening, and resource referral to resources.

The Peer Pride Program’s main objectives are to:

  • Offer social support and mentorship to 2SLGBTQIA+KPU students
  • Provide students with Internal and external resource navigation and referrals
  • Advocate for enhanced student equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice at KPU
This position is reserved for KPU Students only.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Be available to support students at scheduled times at Pride spaces on KPU campuses.
  • Assist the Office of Equity and Inclusive Communities team in the development, administration and evaluation of the Pride Peers Program. This includes creating resources, facilitating activities, discussion groups, workshops and events.
  • Provide social support and referrals to KPU students by being knowledgeable in the services and resources offered by KPU and appropriate external resources.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings, training sessions and ongoing PD opportunities.
  • Promote the program and represent the Pride Peers by participating in on campus outreach.
  • With support and guidance from the Office of Equity and Inclusive Communities, promote awareness and education around sexual and gender diversity issues.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions and team meetings.
  • Present to groups of up to 30 participants.
  • Will be required to work up to 15 hours per week with a flexible schedule.
  • Occasional travel will be required between campuses and to off-campus activities/events (including on weekends).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of at least one (1) year at a post-secondary institution or one (1) semester at KPU
  • Must be a current KPU Student in good academic standing https://www.kpu.ca/advising/academic-standing
  • Must self-identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community
  • Students with past experience in 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy work and knowledge of 2SLGBTQIA+ issues preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of resources on campus.
  • Must have an interest in promoting awareness, education and safe spaces
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality and privacy
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel); experience with MS Publisher or Adobe Creative Suite an asset
  • Creative problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work efficiently and complete tasks independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with event planning is an asset
Salary Information

Student Assistants are paid as per the following:

  • Less than one year of post-secondary (less than 30 credits) – BC Minimum Wage
  • One year of post-secondary (30-60 credits) – BC Minimum Wage plus 8%
  • With a post-secondary diploma or degree – BC Minimum Wage plus 21%
