Job summary

Calgary Airports is seeking a skilled electrical technician to maintain low- and medium-voltage power systems in a bustling, 24/7 airport setting. This onsite role runs Monday to Friday with rotating shifts and offers additional compensation for eligible evening/night hours.

Qualifications

  • Must have RAIC eligibility and support through the process.
  • Journeyperson certification (Red Seal Electrician) required.
  • Technical training in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Engineering, or related field.
  • 4–6 years of experience with LV/MV power systems in critical environments such as airports/utilities.
  • Strong ability to read schematics, control logic, and automation systems.
  • Safety-sensitive role with pre-employment drug/alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on LV/MV electrical distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, generators, UPS systems, and MCCs.
  • Execute safe electrical switching, isolation, and lockout/tagout procedures during planned work and emergencies.
  • Troubleshoot and restore electrical systems during outages and equipment failures, prioritizing critical infrastructure.
  • Operate and support power system controls, including SCADA, PLC, HMIs, and generator control systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, automation, and Modbus issues affecting power distribution and standby generation.
  • Complete maintenance documentation, switching records, test results, and support asset management and reliability initiatives.

What's The Team Like

The facility maintenance team ensures the smooth operation of all indoor spaces at the busy 24/7 airport, keeping terminals, offices, and other buildings safe, functional, and well-maintained. They handle repairs, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems to support airport operations and passenger comfort. Their work is critical to maintaining a clean, efficient, and welcoming environment for travelers and staff.

What Are Some Of The Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on low-and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, generators, UPS systems, and motor control centres.
  • Execute safe electrical switching, isolation, and lockout/tagout procedures during planned work and emergency response activities.
  • Troubleshoot and restore electrical systems during outages and equipment failures, prioritizing critical airport infrastructure and life-safety systems.
  • Operate and support power system controls, including SCADA systems, PLC-based automation, HMIs, and generator control systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, automation, and Modbus communication issues affecting power distribution and standby generation systems.
  • Complete maintenance documentation, switching records, test results, and support asset management and reliability initiatives.
What Do You Need To Bring
  • You'll need to be eligible to obtain and maintain a RAIC, don't worry - we'll help you through this! For more details, check out: RAIC Program and Application Information
  • Journeyperson certification or recognized trade qualification (e.g., Red Seal Electrician) required.
  • Vocational or technical training in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Engineering, Industrial Electrical, or a related field is required.
  • 4-6 years of experience working with low-and medium-voltage electrical power systems in complex or mission-critical environments such as airports, utilities, or industrial plants is required.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of low-and medium-voltage power distribution systems with the ability to safely operate, maintain, test, and troubleshoot electrical infrastructure from 120V to 25kV in compliance with applicable electrical codes, CSA Z462, NETA MTS, and established safety procedures.
  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, control logic, and automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, SCADA) to identify faults, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions in a safety-sensitive, 24/7 operational environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with operations, maintenance teams, contractors, and airport stakeholders; communicate technical and safety information clearly; and maintain professionalism, accountability, and customer focus during routine operations, outages, and emergency response situations.
  • As this position is considered safety-sensitive, candidates must successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as part of the hiring process.
  • This role includes driving as part of its duties; therefore, candidates will be required to provide a valid Class 5 driver's license and a current driver's abstract as part of the hiring process.
