Job summary

Powertech Labs Inc. is seeking a Senior Power System Modelling Engineer to perform model validation and control tuning for generation plants, including wind, solar, and energy storage systems, with compliance to NERC standards.

The role requires a Master’s degree (or equivalent), PE registration, and 5+ years in transient stability, protection, and control. Remote work is acceptable with project deliverables met, and international travel is expected.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems strongly preferred) or Bachelor’s with relevant experience.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with EGBC or other jurisdictions.
  • At least 5 years in power system transient stability, protection, or related research.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing power plant technical documentation and prepare unit-specific test plans.
  • Conducting power system simulation studies aligned with NERC and reliability standards.
  • Preparing detailed engineering reports communicating methodologies, analysis, and findings.
  • Performing peer reviews of technical reports to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Travel to industrial and power generation sites globally for onsite validation testing.
  • Developing technical proposals, including scope, cost estimates, and project schedules.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients and stakeholders to ensure successful execution.
  • Remote work is acceptable, provided deliverables meet expectations.

"

Engineering Service Business Unit focuses on power system software development, power system and substation consulting studies and compliance testing services, as well as asset management solutions for electric utilities and other clients in power industry. We are the vendor of the cutting-edge power system analysis software package, DSATools™, which has been recognized globally as leading-edge technologies and software platforms for dynamic security assessment of large complex power systems for both off-line (system planning) and on-line applications (near-real-time operation). We are also one of primary power system consulting teams well recognized internationally. We are providing a full spectrum of study services from fast electromagnetic transient switching studies, to typical power system planning and operation studies (including transient, small-signal, voltage, and frequency stabilities), post-mortem investigation of system disturbances and events, generation and load interconnection studies, generator including wind and solar renewables, and load model development or validation via field testing, and to NERC compliance studies (e.g., TPL, PRC, MOD, CIP, etc.). We are also equipped with a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) for evaluating and testing new control, protection, and communication schemes and devices.

TheSenior Power System Modelling Engineerwillperformmodel validation and control tuning for generation plants, including wind, solar, and energy storage systems, as well as conducting validation and simulation studies in compliance with NERC and other applicable reliability standards. Key responsibilities include :

  • Conducting power system simulation studiesaligned with NERC and other reliability standards
  • Preparingdetailed engineering reports communicating methodologies, analysis, and findings
  • Performingpeer reviews of technical reports to ensure quality and compliance
  • Travel to industrial and power generation sites globally to perform onsite generator model validation testing
  • Developing technical proposals, including scope, cost estimates, and project schedules
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure successful execution
  • Remote work is acceptable, provided deliverables meet expectations
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems strongly preferred); Bachelor’s degree with direct & relevant experience will be considered
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) or other jurisdictions.
  • At least 5years of work experience in power system transient stability studies, protection & control, or related post-grad research
  • Strong knowledge and understanding ofgenerator and renewable modeling, power system and/or substation protections, and control systems of synchronous generators, renewables, FACTs, etc.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experiences in power plant (thermal, solar, wind, BESS, etc.) power flow, dynamic and short circuit analysis using simulation software (PSCAD, DSATools, PSS/E, PSLF, ASPEN, ETAP, etc.).
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experiences in power plant and generator protection and control theory and practice on relay instruments (SEL, Beckwith, GE Multilin, etc.).
  • Experiences on site commissioning and testing including regular field work following procedures, data collection using digital DAQ systems, control equipment function and communication troubleshooting, safety training and awareness, considered as an asset
  • Must hold a valid class 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent.Willing and e ligible to work and travelin US for site testing

Job Level: P3 ( Annual salary range : $ 119K - 148K)

Please note : Candidates with proper educational background who do not meet the experience requirements are encouraged to apply and may be considered for lower job levels.

The salary range will depend on the level the individual is assessed at. Applicants will be assessed based on current status with EGBC, years of experience, relevancy and quality of experience, as well as their core competencies. Internationally-trained engineers may be considered if eligible for EGBC registration.

Please be advised that this role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to employment.

As part of the selection process, applicants may be required to complete a written test/assessment and/or a presentation as part of the interview process.
