ETP’s expertise in EMT simulation, real-time digital simulation, digital controls, and power system automation helps clients reduce project risk and accelerate deployment schedules. Role Description

The Senior Power System Studies Engineer is a full-time role based in North Vancouver, BC, with a hybrid work arrangement that allows some work from home. This role is responsible for leading and performing detailed power system studies, including stability, short-circuit, and interconnection analyses for inverter-based resources, energy storage, and complex data center loads. The engineer will develop and validate models in EMT and real-time simulation environments, collaborate on plant control system design, and support Hardware-in-the-Loop testing to verify performance under realistic grid conditions. Day-to-day activities include preparing technical reports, presenting findings to clients, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to project planning and risk assessment. The role also involves mentoring junior engineers, supporting business development with technical input, and staying current with emerging grid codes and standards.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in power system studies, modeling, and analysis.
  • Strong experience with PSS®E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, PSLF, ETAP, and/or similar platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of power system dynamics, stability, EMT analysis, and grid integration.
  • Experience with BESS, IBRs, data centers, renewable generation, and/or large-load interconnections.
  • Strong understanding of interconnection requirements and study processes in ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, IESO, AESO, CAISO, and other North American markets.
  • Ability to independently manage technical studies and communicate findings and recommendations effectively.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • P.Eng./PE designation or eligibility for professional registration.
  • Experience with real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Experience with weak-grid systems, GFM/GFL controls, and advanced IBR modeling.

Key Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced studies engineer with strong capabilities in:

  • Load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, and dynamic studies
  • EMT and specialized power system studies
  • Data center studies for both grid-connected and off-grid/islanded operation
  • Inverter-Based Resources including BESS, solar, wind, STATCOM, and GFM/GFL technologies
  • Large-load interconnection and system impact studies
  • Voltage stability, frequency stability, harmonics, resonance, SSO/SSCI, and other special studies
  • Generator and IBR dynamic modeling and model validation
  • Experience with PSS®E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, PSLF, ETAP and/or similar platforms
  • Strong understanding of interconnection requirements and study processes in ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, IESO, AESO, CAISO, and other North American markets
  • Ability to independently lead complex studies, interpret results, identify risks, and develop practical mitigation solutions
