Job summary

FortisBC is seeking a Control Centre Operations Leader to manage a team responsible for monitoring and supporting the provincial power system. You will drive reliability, safety culture, and operational excellence while guiding adaptation to evolving needs and industry requirements.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will oversee budget, stakeholder relationships, and continuous improvements, with strong emphasis on safety and performance development across the team.

Qualifications

  • Diploma of Technology in Electrical, Instrumentation and Electronics from a recognized program.
  • 7–10 years or equivalent utility experience; NERC Certification plus 5 years as a System Operator.
  • Journeyperson Tradesperson certification considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to the Control Centre team, ensuring safe and efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Oversee resource planning, scheduling, and work prioritization to support transmission, distribution, and generation activities.
  • Lead the team’s response to operational issues, emergencies, and system events.
  • Ensure compliance with safety requirements, reliability standards, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Manage Control Centre operating budgets and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and optimize costs.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners and regulatory organizations.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, technology, and service delivery.
  • Develop team capability through hiring, onboarding, coaching, training, and performance development.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Operations Manager, System Control Centre, you will lead a team of highly skilled professionals responsible for monitoring and supporting the provincial power system. You’ll play a critical role in ensuring system reliability, operational excellence, and a strong safety culture, while helping the Control Centre adapt to evolving operational needs and industry requirements.

  • Foster a culture where safety, accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence are at the forefront of everything we do.
Requirements
  • Diploma of Technology (Electrical, Instrumentation and Electronics) from a recognized program.
  • 7 – 10 years OR equivalent directly related utility experience (NERC Certification plus 5 years’ experience as a System Operator).
  • Journeyperson Tradesperson certification considered an asset.
Other Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the utility industry; understand the impact of outages
  • Working Knowledge of the electric power system infrastructure
  • Knowledge of designated operational area and related systems, work methods and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in emergency response
  • Ability to become NERC certified as a transmission operator. FortisBC will provide the training and opportunity to write the exam.
  • Strong analytical and professional judgment skills
