Salary: $50,000 + benefits

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Metabolic Physiology.

Job Description

The Shearer lab at the University of Calgary is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Scholar position. Driven by a mission to ¿leverage metabolic insights to predict, prevent, and treat chronic diseases,¿ this research is at the forefront of uncovering the links between lifestyle, nutrition and disease risk. The successful candidate will work on a project that aims to understand the role of mitochondria and gut microbiota in health and disease. Experimental approaches include human cohorts, rodent models, microbiota sequencing and bioinformatics. Experience in gut microbiota analysis (16S, shotgun sequencing) and interpretation is essential. Likewise, prior experience working with mitochondrial respiration is an asset. Candidates will be expected to apply for external and internal fellowships and have a strong desire to establish an independent career in science. The candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment and have access to career development and training opportunities through core facilities and research institutes at the Cumming School of Medicine (Libin Cardiovascular Institute and Alberta Children¿s Hospital Research Institute). The research program of the Shearer lab is funded by CIHR, NSERC and industry.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellence in the form of peer-reviewed publications. The applicant is expected to be of the highest caliber with an academic and publication track record that would be competitive for national and international fellowships
  • They will have completed their PhD in Metabolism, Nutrition, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or other field related to nutrition and the gut microbiota within last three years. The candidate should have a strong background in working with rodent disease models. Knowledge of microbiota assessment and data integration are a must. Metabolomics expertise is also an asset
  • High level of effective organizational, time management and personal initiative skills along with excellent oral and communication skills are a requirement for this position
  • Communication: Fluency in English, both written and oral. Experience presenting to academic audience is required
  • Time-management: The applicant must have excellent time management skills and be able to work in a self-directed manner within an interdisciplinary environment
  • Supervision: Previous experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students is an asset
