The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Metabolic Physiology.

Job Description: The Shearer lab at the University of Calgary is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Scholar position. The research focuses on leveraging metabolic insights to predict, prevent, and treat chronic diseases, exploring the links between lifestyle, nutrition, and disease risk. The successful candidate will work on understanding the role of mitochondria and gut microbiota in health and disease, using approaches such as human cohorts, rodent models, microbiota sequencing, and bioinformatics. Experience in gut microbiota analysis (16S, shotgun sequencing) and interpretation is essential. Prior experience with mitochondrial respiration is an asset. Candidates will be expected to apply for external and internal fellowships and aim to establish an independent career in science. The environment is highly collaborative, with access to career development and training through core facilities and research institutes at the Cumming School of Medicine (Libin Cardiovascular Institute and Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute). The research program is funded by CIHR, NSERC, and industry.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence with peer-reviewed publications; candidates should have a strong academic and publication record competitive for national and international fellowships.
  • Completed PhD within the last three years in fields such as Metabolism, Nutrition, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or related areas; experience with rodent disease models, microbiota assessment, and data integration is required. Metabolomics expertise is a plus.
  • Effective organizational, time management, and personal initiative skills, along with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in English, both written and oral, with experience presenting to academic audiences.
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to work independently within an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Mentoring experience with undergraduate and graduate students is an asset.
